All: Answered my own question. The pangocairo option failed to install because I did not have fontconfig installed.
Installing fontconfig and reinstallaing cairo with fontconfig available solved the problem. However, even though it appears that the pango make built the pangocairo module, the make install step did not install it. How can I force the install of the pangocairo module? Thanks.
