I tried with F09B and it worked fine. Yes, 10005 is the hexadecimal value I 
gave you. I just used one of the random empty slots to test this.

I am just trying to understand how I can choose a random code, map a glyph to 
that code and then display the glyph by invoking it from a C program that is 
based on gtk.

Does pango simply load the font file and pull up a glyph based on whatever 
value I feed it? Can I bypass the gtk function and directly deal with pango or 
is this not possible?
