you need to pass pointers to widgets, then use them:
gint my_idle_function (gpointer arg)
{
GtkWidget *w = (GtkWidget *) arg;
gtk_widget_do_something (w, ...);
return (should_be_called_again ? TRUE : FALSE);
}
