You can then write your pixel data to the image and blit it to the drawing_area using gdk_draw_image. That should be the fastest method available if you need to draw pixel data. I wouldn't care too much about the speed penalty of using GdkRGB however. It's pretty fast. I'm not sure if there's a widget for DGA available. It's certainly not part of the standard GTK+ distribution.
