can't get font aliasing to work with gtk 2 and gnome 2

Hi, I have just installed gnome 2.0.1 from the sources tarballs. Everything is working like a charm exept font anti aliasing.   Font anti aliasing works well with QT apps, and with the patched version of mozilla 1.0 but not in Gnome 2   I have $GDK_USE_XFT set to 1   what have i forgotten?   reguards JP
