[gtk-list] Capturing Destroy Event for widget

I have a widget with some custom data.

I want to free the custom data before destroying the widget, should I
capture the
"destroy_event" signal?

Also, when I destroy a GtkMenuItem widget, is the submenu of it destroyed
too?
If not, should I use the above method to destroy it too?
