With the recent advance on the thread-safety front*, I took a first stab
at cairo-gobject wrappers. Convincing ExtUtils::MakeMaker to create two
shared objects from one Makefile.PL didn't work out, so I just created a
separate distribution instead. Here's a tarball for initial testing:

I took the liberty to include your cairo-overlay port as an example.
Does anyone see a problem with packaging this glue code in a separate
distribution?
