mcs -lib:/usr/lib/mono/gtk-sharp-2.0/ helloworld.cs -r:gtk-sharp.dll
-r:glib-sharp.dll
did seem more definitive with , -lib:PATH, to a basic beginner like myself.
I'd guess that was the aim of the tutorial.

mcs helloworld.cs -pkg:gtk-sharp
or
mcs helloworld.cs -pkg:gtk-sharp-2.0
