That's funny because I did exactly the same thing in the meantime. But I can 
not confirm the icon-space problem. As a first step, this solution is good 
enough for me...

Yes, This is what I have used, too. (Especially http://www.mono-
project.com/GtkSharpNodeViewTutorial in this case.)
