I didn't end up using the tool, but I'm glad to know it exists.  


The problem turned out to be that I was doing all my work on the same thread as 
GTK, thereby blocking the run loop for the GUI. I fixed it by starting the work 
that the progress bar referenced on a separate thread and then using Invoke to 
force updates to the progress bar. 


What I eventually ended up doing was basically the advice advocated by the 
Responsive Applications document at 
http://www.mono-project.com/Responsive_Applications 


Thank you again. Your insights that the problem involved the way that GTK 
relates to threads led me to the correct solution.
