The version of libtool this distribution was created with appears to be
the culprit behind an unnecessary "-L/usr/X11R6/lib" stuck into the
command line on AMD64 systems. This causes the build to fall over if a
32-bit libGL.so lives in that directory.

autoreconf'ing solved the problem for me; I've got Fedora Core 4's
patched libtool 1.5.16 on this system.
