In closing, after installing gmake and using GNU make to build gtkglext
everything builds correctly.

I believe the line near the bottom of m4macros/Makefile.in that uses the $<
and $@ automatic variables is causing problems on Solaris 8's native make
binary.

Hopefully whoever has commit permissions for the repo sees to this minor
defect.
