That was the gtkmm 2.0 and 2.2 version of the tutorial. If you are using a more up-to-date version of gtkmm then the newer version of the tutorial will be more helpful: http://www.gtkmm.org/docs/gtkmm-2.4/docs/tutorial/html/index.html I am not sure whether I want to put the 2.0/2.2 documentation back online.
