For learning, I'd recommend the latest stable version - 3.18; odd
numbers are development versions. 2.24 is the last of the Gnome 2
versions; you're best to learn on version 3 unless you're planning on
only developing for Gnome 2.
Just as good an answer is use the version packaged by your distro; that
way keeping it up to date will be simple.
