Rooney the favourite to land 2010 PFA Award” plus 2 more- Wayne Rooney the favourite to land 2010 PFA Award - Six Nations rugby chief defends Friday night opener - Experience may still give Inter the edge in Serie A title battle Wayne Rooney the favourite to land 2010 PFA Award Posted: 15 Apr 2010 12:18 PM PDT Wayne Rooney (Photo: Gordon Flood) Manchester United’s Wayne Rooney is the early favourite to win the 2010 PFA Player of the Year award after this year’s four nominees were announced on Thursday. Rooney will face competition from Chelsea striker Didier Drogba, Arsenal midfielder Cesc Fabregas and Manchester City forward Carlos Tévez. The England striker is the heavy favourite to land the award following a prolific season so far for Manchester United in which the 24-year-old netted 34 goals in 41 appearances — an average rate of 0.8 goals per game. Should Rooney scoop the award he would become the fourth Manchester United player to win the title in as many seasons, following on from Cristiano Ronaldo in 2007 and 2008 and Ryan Giggs last year. Both Fabregas and Rooney have picked up the PFA Young Player of the Year award in recent seasons and Didier Drogba will be looking to become only the second-ever Chelsea player to win the award after John Terry’s success in 2006. Drogba has scored 32 goals for The Blues this season, meanwhile Carlos Tévez has notched up 28 strikes for Manchester City. Arsenal’s Cesc Fabregas managed 19 goals and as many assists for the Gunners before he fractured his leg against Barcelona in the Champions League a fortnight ago, effectively ending his season. The awards ceremony will take place at the Grosvenor House Hotel in London on April 25. - Momentum building behind Arsenal’s title challenge - Rooney absence leaves United with striker dilemma - Nervy win sees Chelsea move four points clear at the top Six Nations rugby chief defends Friday night opener Posted: 15 Apr 2010 02:30 AM PDT Welsh Rugby chief David Pickering has defended the decision to schedule the opening fixture of the 2011 Six Nations with England for a Friday night. The match will be the third consecutive season in which Wales have played a Friday fixture and reactions have been mixed. France hosted Wales on a Friday in 2009 and the Welsh returned the compliment the following year but the fixture against England marks a new turning point. Pickering, the Chairman of both the Welsh Rugby Union and the Six Nations, defended the experiment which has been written off by some as a needless money-spinner. Pickering said: "Friday night schedules are part of the schedule now. It is a way of progressing rugby and that is the best proof of the experiment." TV ratings for the fixture with France certainly compared favourably to Saturday matches, pulling in 4.6m viewers compared to 3.4m for their game against Ireland. Fans are unsure about matches on work days however, and Ariva Trains Wales also criticised the decision, saying it was a "very inconvenient time for the thousands of fans that will watch the game" Ariva faced the wrath of many Welsh supporters earlier this year when they failed to put on extra trains for the match against France and Cardiff's antiquated transport system will be tested again on February 4th. Six Nations games are traditionally played on a Saturday with Sunday games also becoming a regular part of the calendar since the introduction of Italy in 2000. But while the atmosphere for Wales' Friday fixtures against the French have illuminated the Stade de France and Millennium Stadium in the past couple of years, the jury is still well and truly out. - Six Nations: France march on as Italy are swept aside - Top 14: Stade Français humiliated by Toulouse - RBS Six Nations: Wales v France preview Experience may still give Inter the edge in Serie A title battle Posted: 15 Apr 2010 02:21 AM PDT The titanic ongoing battle between Inter Milan and Roma for the Serie A title looks set to go to the wire. For the past few months, a fifth consecutive Serie A title for Inter was regarded as little more than a formality. Punters and professionals alike assumed that Jose Mourinho would simply steer the defending champions to an 18th top-flight title at the expense of city rivals, AC. However, nobody accounted for AS Roma. Having been traded at all kinds of ever-shortening odds- down to 1.05 at one point- the Nerrazurri now find themselves in a real battle for the title. The Champions League semi-finalists have been ousted from top spot in Italy for the first time since October and having at one time been in a position to pretty much wrap up the Scudetto with ten matches to go, find it all to play for with a mere five games left. Roma’s run of form has been nothing short of amazing. Unbeaten in 23 games- a sequence stretching back to October 28th- Claudio Ranieri’s side now head the table by one point after last weekend’s results when Inter could only draw 2-2 at Fiorentina and Roma beat Atalanta 2-1. The table reads Roma P33 W20 D8 L5 on 68 points with Inter P33 W19 D10 L4 on 67 – and then come AC, three further back on 64 points, who seem all but out of the race. So where will the title be won and lost? Form: Roma have won their last 5 matches — 12 of their last 15 in fact — and haven’t lost since Udinese beat them way back in October. Inter’s recent form shows just two wins in their last seven Serie A games. Advantage Roma. Fixtures: Roma face Lazio (A), Sampdoria (H), Parma (A), Cagliari (H), Chievo (A) whilst Inter have Juventus (H), Atalanta (H), Lazio (A), Chievo (H), Siena (A). With 3 home/2 away, compared to 2 home/3 away, it’s just about advantage Inter on this score. Focus: Both sides have made the Coppa Italia semi-finals but Inter have the added distraction of the Champions League. They must play Barcelona either side of hosting Atalanta. Can Mourinho and his players win in Europe and/or at home? Advantage Roma. Fatigue: Further to the last point, Inter have to play five matches in 16 days. That’s a lot to ask as each game is a highly pressurised affair. The team and manager may well have been there before but the current leaders have a much lighter schedule. Advantage Roma. Finishing: Experience counts for a great deal and Inter’s record over the past four seasons — admittedly their first two Serie A wins were taken away from Juve and handed to them a result of the match-fixing scandal — shows they know how to win. Roma are without a Serie A title since 2000-01, Ranieri has never won something as big as this, Mourinho and Inter have seen it all before. Advantage Inter. So it’s close, very close. Roma certainly shade it on several counts but Inter clearly have the edge in the two areas which may well have the biggest influence on the destination of the title, namely the fixtures they have to play and the finishing ability they have shown in recent seasons. They have a record of getting the job done. As it stands, five matches for each club will determine the outcome of this season’s title race and with Inter and Roma both set to play Lazio and Chievo during this period, their other three games look set to decide the winner. Inter face Juventus, who still have an outside chance of a Champions League spot, but then have two of the bottom three with Atalanta and Siena. Roma’s run-in includes highflying Sampdoria but then mid-table duo of Parma and Cagliari. It’s a fantastic battle, set to run all the way to the final day of the season on May 16, but there can obviously only be one winner. And on balance, it looks like it could still be Inter’s year.
