Ltd)The Sport Review rounds up all of latest happenings from the world
of Formula 1.RED BULL will introduce the Switchable Rear Wing (SRW) or
F-duct in free practice in Canada after deciding against using it at
the Turkish Grand Prix as it made compromises on their downforce. The
team will continue to work on its development and have it ready for the
next race.
MICHELIN has re-entered the race to become F1's sole tyre supplier from
2011. The French tyre company last supplied teams in 2007 but pulled
out after failing to compete with Bridgestone. Michelin has the backing
of FIA President Jean Todt, but F1 supremo Bernie Ecclestone favours a
deal with Pirelli—the company expected to win the bid—despite talks
recently stalling. Of the teams, only Ferrari and Renault favour a deal
with Michelin after McLaren and Mercedes recently switched sides.
ADRIAN NEWEY has said he does not expect to switch teams again in F1
when talking about his future recently. He also said speculated he
could not go on doing it in his 60s. Aged 51, that is good news if you
work for Red Bull. Newey, their chief technical officer, is arguably
the best designer F1 has ever had.
ANDREW PARR has said discussions to have up to 24 races a year are
being discussed with teams as Bernie Ecclestone looks to expand the
sport into new markets. Just this week a deal was announced to take a
race to the United States Austin, Texas from 2012. India is set to join
the calendar from 2011, with possible races in Russia, France, and
Africa under consideration. Ecclestone confirmed a return to Mexico is
not on the cards, and a new long-term deal for Turkey is being
considered despite poor attendances.
MERCEDES GP’s Ross Brawn has hinted that Michael Schumacher will remain
in F1 beyond the end of 2010 despite rumours to the contrary after a
largely disappointing return. He also confirmed that the team expects
to retain its current driver line-up into 2011.
Former FIA boss MAX MOSLEY has accused Ferrari of trying to fix races
on the weekend of their 800th F1 race. Mosley told the Daily Mail,
Ferrari President Luca di Montezemolo asked the FIA to ban the double
diffuser attributed to much of Brawn's success in 2009. Mosley also
reveals that Ferrari's attempts to fix races stretches back to 1999.
Who is the new FIA President? The man di Montezemolo brought to Ferrari
in 1993 to turn the team around, Jean Todt.
WILLIAMS have revealed they have secured most of their budget for the
2011 season after making a profit last year, while discussions are
underway with current and potential partners. Earlier this year it was
announced that a deal with major sponsor, The Royal Bank of Scotland,
will end.
USF1 has finally ended its attempts to become an F1 team after engine
supplier Cosworth pulled its contract with the North Carolina-based
team. Despite attempting to join in 2010, the team massively
underestimated the costs involved and failed to deliver. There was a
hope the team could secure funding and resources in time for 2011, but
the game is up. The factory has been shut down and the staff released
from employment. The deadline for 2011 is 23 June, with 15 teams
expected to apply including GP2 team ART, and Spanish team Epilson
Euskadi.

me, says new Real coach Mourinho Posted: 31 May 2010 06:37 AM PDT

Mourinho, 47, led Inter Milan to an historic treble last seasonNew Real
Madrid manager José Mourinho says he is focused on his job at Real
Madrid and not the threat posed by rivals Barcelona.“I am not
anti-Barcelona,” said Mourinho, who signed a four-year deal with the La
Liga outfit. “I am coach of Real but Barça doesn’t worry me. My only
concern is to grow Real.
“Barça are great rivals and we respect them. If I am hated at
Barcelona, it is their problem but not mine. Fear is not a word in my
football dictionary.”
Mourinho, 47, was unveiled as Real’s new coach at a press conference
earlier today and spoke of his ambitions for his time at the Bernabéu.
“I don’t change my level of ambition or motivation,” he continued. “I
gave everything to every club where I have been and I will do the same
here. I don’t feel any kind of different pressure.
“I am a coach that improves day by day. I arrive with everything a
coach can win in club football.”
The former Chelsea boss also spoke of Cristiano Ronaldo’s importance,
but insisted he is focused on Real’s collective success rather than
individual prosperity.
“Cristiano Ronaldo is an incredible player not only for Real but for
the whole of football,” he said.
“The most important thing is not the coach or the players but the club.
We are too small compared to the dimension of the club. If we work as a
group, it’s not difficult to get results.”

run at Roland Garros comes to tame end Posted: 31 May 2010 04:34 AM PDT

Andy Murray was knocked out of Roland Garros in tame fashion after the
Scot succumbed to the impressive Tomas Berdych last night. As the gloomy
Parisian night descended on the court Murray was dumped out in straight
sets 6-4 7-5 6-3 by the Czech 15th seed.
Murray was out-manoeuvred and out-muscled by Berdych’s rasping
groundstrokes as the British No.1 was rarely able to make inroads on
the Czech's serve during the two hours and six minutes it took to
dispose of the world No.4.
Both players persevered through spitting rain before the match was
suspended, and as it resumed after the brief delay Murray voiced his
displeasure over the conditions.
The bad light, the clay-laden balls and an inconsistent playing
surface—all subjects of complaints voiced by the frustrated Scot in the
aftermath of defeat.
In truth Berdych thoroughly deserved his place in the quarter-finals.
Murray looked disinterested and sluggish—unlike the player often
described as the fittest athlete on the tour.
After the match Berdych revealed his coach had described Murray's
persona as “looking like he doesn't want to play.”
It was a remark which could be legitimately aimed at the Australian
Open finalist. Murray’s coach’s reaction to a rare outburst of
explosive strokes from the Scot mid-way through the third set asked:
where was this tenacity in the previous two sets? Sadly it was a simply
a case of too little, too late.
Murray now has a week to recuperate before beginning his defence of the
Aegon Championships title at Queen’s Club.
