Portugal’s unbeaten run means nothing, insists Carlos Queiroz

statistics (Photo: RTP)
His side may be unbeaten at the 2010 World Cup but Portugal manager
Carlos Queiroz is refusing to get carried away.
Portugal set up an enticing last 16 tie with Spain when they played out
a goalless draw with Brazil on Friday—a result which ensured the
continuation of their impressive unbeaten run of 19 matches under their
current manager.

Queiroz, however, insists the number is meaningless.

“Statistics don’t mean very much,” said Queiroz. “They might build up
our confidence, but we cannot go to the round of 16 just with
reputation and statistics.

“Our players have to prove their worth on the pitch.”

The Portugal manager, 57, also played down the significance of his
side’s solid defensive record having kept 22 clean sheets in their last
26 matches.

“This shows that we are playing good defence,” continued the former
Real Madrid manager. “But we have to keep our feet on the ground
because now the knock-out round begins and any mistakes can send you
home.”

Queiroz admitted that he has not had time to analyse his side’s next
opponents during the group stages, but will do his best to prepare his
side for the match against their Iberian rivals.

I have not analysed any other groups up to now,” he admitted. “I have
just focused on my group, which was enough work.

“But now we will prepare to be at our best in our next match. The
important thing is that we play how we know.”

F1: Red Bull’s Sebastian Vettel takes pole in Valencia

Sebastian Vettel led Red Bull to their fourth front-row lock out of the
season in qualifying for the European Grand Prix in Valencia.
The German recorded his fourth pole of 2010 season with a time of
1:37:587 to equal as Red Bull returned to their season dominance of
qualifying.

McLaren's Lewis Hamilton overcame a difficult final practice session to
take third, with team mate Jenson Button back in seventh.

Ferrari's Fernando Alonso and Felipe Massa came home fourth and fifth
ahead of Renault's Robert Kubica who had shown pace in final practice.

Williams continued their good form this weekend as both Nico Hülkenberg
and Rubens Barrichello both set a 1:38:428 to take eighth and ninth,
with Hülkenberg ahead as he set the time first; under pressure Renault
driver Vitaly Petrov rounded out the top 10.

Vettel's time smashed the previous quickest pole time set by Massa in
2008 by just over 1.9 seconds, and was 1.4 seconds quicker than
Hamilton's pole time last year.

Despite a good outing in final practice Force India will be
disappointed with their qualifying with Adrian Sutil finishing
thirteenth and Vitantonio Liuzzi fourteenth, despite both cars
finishing inside the top 10 in final practice.

Michael Schumacher's dismal return to F1 continued as he endured his
worst qualifying session to start fifteenth for the race, just three
tenths quicker than the Sauber of Pedro De La Rosa, with team mate Nico
Rosberg half a second quicker in twelfth.

Toro Rosso’s Sébastien Buemi continued to show his worth, and promise
as a future world champion, as he qualified eleventh and almost a
second quicker than team mate Jaime Algerusauri in seventeenth.

Of the newest teams Lotus, celebrating their 500th race, continued to
show they are the best-placed to eventually succeed. Jarno Trulli led
teammate Heikki Kovalainen to take nineteenth and twentieth, 1.3
seconds slower than Sauber's Kamui Kobayashi but 1.4 seconds ahead of
the leading Virgin Racing car of Lucas di Grassi, and almost 2 seconds
quicker than the leading Hispania car of Karun Chandhok.

That is now eight poles from nine races for Red Bull and the grid for
tomorrow is set up for a fantastic showdown between Red Bull, McLaren
and Ferrari ahead of England's World Cup clash with Germany.

Overtaking has been limited on the Valencia Street Circuit in recent
years, so expect a bit of a scramble down to the tricky turn two as
drivers jostle to get ahead.

The race is live on BBC 2 and the BBC website in the UK from 13:00 BST,
with BBC's race coverage beginning at 12:10.

Sebastian Vettel tops final European GP practice

Red Bull's Sebastian Vettel set a late quick lap to record the fastest
time in final practice for the European Grand Prix.
The German's one minute 38:052 was one tenth quicker than Renault's
Robert Kubica who had set his own stunning lap just minutes before.

Just one second covered the top 12 drivers ahead of qualifying later
this afternoon, with the top six separated by just half a second and no
team really dominating.

McLaren had problems on both cars, Lewis Hamilton a minor issue with
the front left brake, while Jenson Button needed a gurney flap added to
his rear wing to counter instability through the fast corners.

As McLaren struggled, both Force India and Williams took advantage with
Adrian Sutil looking competitive throughout final practice to take
fourth quickest with a time of 1:38:500, while Barrichello took sixth
for Williams with a 1:38:623, and Sutil's team mate Tonio Liuzzi took
seventh with a 1:38:676.

Virgin Racing's Lucas Di Grassi set the first lap of one minute 43:867
almost twenty minutes into final practice as many cars waited for the
smaller teams to go out and start the process of bedding in the track.

Fernando Alonso was quick from his first run, setting the fastest lap
before Vettel, Kubica, Mark Webber and Force India's Adrian Sutil, all
jumped ahead as teams switched to the option tyres for the final runs,
as Alonso settled for third fifth fastest with a 1:38:513.

After a steady pace throughout practice the action picked up in the
last five minutes with all cars on track as the teams made their final
preparations for qualifying.

At the back, Lotus were again the quickest of the new teams as Heikki
Kovalainen finished 1.5 seconds off the slowest of Sauber of Pedro De
La Rosa's 1:39:699.

Michael Schumacher's poor form continued as the seven-time world
champion could only manage fifteenth quickest with a 1:39:222, behind
rookies Nico Hülkenburg and Vitaly Petrov. Schumacher's team mate Nico
Rosberg recorded the eleventh quickest time behind the McLarens with a
1:38:822.

Ferrari, Red Bull and Renault look strong for qualifying following
final practice, with McLaren and Mercedes set for a battle to join the
top six.

But are McLaren sandbagging? It would be an unusual move, but it is
clear that Ferrari and Red Bull are making good use of the F-duct and
blown diffuser combination – McLaren have just the F-duct, while
Renault have just the blown diffuser.

Qualifying is at 13:00 BST Live on BBC 1/Red Button/BBC website in the
UK.

Dunga lashes out at defensive Portugal after Brazil stalemate

Dunga accused Portugal of 'not wanting to attack' (Photo: Reto Stauffer)
Brazil coach Dunga struck out at Portugal after their unspectacular 0-0
draw in Durban yesterday.
Both sides progress to the knockout stages of the competition but Dunga
expressed his disappointment at what he perceived as Portuguese
negativity.

"We are not happy," said the 1994 World Cup winner.

"Brazil always play to win and we tried to attack until the end.
Portugal didn’t want to attack, they wanted to defend."

"My team is always ready to go forward and that was the case today."

Brazil have often been accused of being overly negative during Dunga's
reign as coach.

But the 46-year-old, who took charge following the 2006 World Cup, laid
the blame firmly on Carlos Queiroz's Portugal.

"The Portuguese team defended from midfield backwards," he added.

"It made it difficult to penetrate their defence. We nevertheless had
three or four goalscoring opportunities.”
