Force India's Paul di Resta has his fingers crossed for a race seat in 2011 after getting his hands on the team's F1 car during free practice sessions this year. Di Resta, is already well-connected in the sport with backing from Mercedes—the team he drives for in the DTM series—while Lewis Hamilton's father Anthony is his manager. His next outing in the VJM03 will come this weekend at Silverstone. Red Bull want to extend Sebastian Vettel's contract to at least 2015 as they look to ward off any interest from rivals Mercedes, McLaren and Ferrari. Team principal Christian Horner even joked about extending it to 2028, when Vettel will be the same age Michael Schumacher is now. Vettel negotiates his own contracts, but says he is more worried about a competitive car than money. GP2 team ART have pulled out of the race to become the 13th team on the grid in 2011 citing "unfavourable economic conditions". Their place has been taken by the US-based Cypher Group, believed to contain some elements of the defunct USF1 outfit. Rivals to the new US bid include Epsilon Euskadi, Stefan GP and Durango. Bruno Senna wants to stay with Hispania in 2011 despite a difficult debut season for the Spanish team. The Brazilian said: "I think I have developed a lot, learned a lot in F1. “I have improved so much on driving and being assured of myself, in motivation. In the end of the day, all I think about is making my career long.” Williams and McLaren will test their versions of Red Bull's blown exhaust during free practice at Silverstone this weekend. McLaren say that if the drivers think it is good, they will run it for qualifying and the race. The blown exhaust is believed to give a team an extra two or three tenths per lap. Officials for the Texas Grand Prix will be at Silverstone this weekend, keen to learn from the best of what it has to offer. The English circuit has recently undergone track and facility upgrades and had lost the race to rival Donington before the East Midlands circuit suffered financial problems. Adrian Sutil has revealed he is interested in the second seat at Renault alongside Robert Kubica for 2011. Sutil has impressed in the Mercedes-powered Force India this year, and with Renault rumoured to be in bed with Mastercard for next season, and Kubica already signed up, he will be looking to secure a fast and competent team-mate for the Pole. Former world champion Kimi Räikkönen, Mercedes reserve driver Nick Heidfeld, and Lotus' Timo Glock are also in the running to partner Kubica. And finally, Ferrari have revealed their new logo to replace the controversial 'barcode' design. The new emblem will come into effect at the beginning of 2011. The 2010 logo was said by some to be too similar to principal sponsor Marlboro's branding. Ferrari team principal Stefano Domenicali confirmed the team will still be called Scuderia Ferrari Marlboro. Leicester and England scrum half Harry Ellis retires Posted: 08 Jul 2010 03:39 PM PDT Leicester and England scrum half Harry Ellis has retired from all forms of rugby after a long battle with knee problems. Ellis, 28, who played 173 times in nine seasons for the Tigers, also made 23 England appearances as well as one for the British and Irish Lions. He has only played 24 times for Leicester in the last three seasons however, after rupturing anterior cruciate ligaments. “I have a history of problems with that knee and it got almost impossible to play on,” Ellis told the Leicester Mercury. “I was battling through the pain barrier all the time. It was even affecting me when I wasn’t playing. “It was a very hard decision to make, but it was also easy on the basis of what it had been doing to me. “As well as my rugby, there was also my health to think about. The amount of painkillers I was taking every day was causing my stomach real problems.” Ellis is popular among players and coaches and received plenty of good wishes following the disappointing news. England manager Martin Johnson, a team-mate of Ellis with Leicester and England, said: “Harry has been an excellent player who always gave everything for Leicester Tigers and England. Tigers head coach Richard Cockerill said Ellis had “great strength of character” and would be missed at the club. “It is always a sad day when injury ends the career of any player, and Harry has been a valuable and popular member of the squad here for almost 10 years.” AS Roma set for sale as Sensi family’s reign comes to an end Posted: 08 Jul 2010 03:23 PM PDT AS Roma is set to be put up for sale as part of a proposed deal between the club’s owners and a creditor bank. The deal looks likely to end the Sensi family’s 17-year reign as owners of the Serie A club. Roma's financial frailties have been well-documented in recent years and the situation was worsened by the club's failure to qualify for the Champions League in 2008-09. Compagnia Italpetroli, the holding company of the Sensi family, owe Italian bank UniCredit over €325 million with both parties involved in discussions over the future of the firm and consequently the club. “The primary objective (will be) to go ahead with the valuation and the sale of the AS Roma shareholding,” read a statement by Italpetroli late on Thursday night. The Sensi family’s dynasty began in 1991 when they took over at the Stadio Olimpico from previous owner Giuseppe Ciarrapico. Rosella Sensi became president of the Rome outfit when her father, Franco Sensi, passed away in August 2008 and her family currently hold a controlling 67.1% stake in the club. The Sensi family are expected to retain their family residence and real estate worth around €25-30 million and the lending institution is likely to appoint advisors to aid the club in their search for new buyers. Since Rosella Sensi succeeded her father in 2008, she has sought new buyers for the club with wealthy investors from Russia, the United Arab Emirates and the United States all linked with the Serie A side. The mayor of Rome, Gianni Alemanno, has recently expressed concern about Roma's immediate future to La Gazzetta dello Sport. "This is the most delicate time,” Alemanno said. “If Roma in fact becomes the property of a bank, we will need to be careful to ensure that the team and the club are preserved.” On the subject of prospective new owners, he added: "We will always seek to confirm that they are focused on the team and on its ability to do well in the next championship." Roma, Juventus and Lazio are the only three football clubs in Italy which are floated on the Italian stock exchange. Cavendish back in winning form at the Tour de France Posted: 08 Jul 2010 02:58 PM PDT Mark Cavendish hit back after a disappointing first four days of the 2010 Tour de France, comfortably winning a bunch sprint in Montargis. Questions had been raised over the Manxman's form after a disappointing effort in the previous day's stage, where he was convincingly beaten to the line by Alessandro Petacchi. But with HTC-Columbia teammate Mark Renshaw excelling as his lead-out man, Cavendish cruised to victory, his 11th in le Tour. Green jersey holder and current incumbent Thor Hushovd remains 52 points clear of Cavendish, who is currently in 9th place, but the relief at only his 4th win of the season was clear. "It is an incredible feeling. All that emotion and pressure that has built up all year has finally come to an end," said the 25-year-old. "That was bad luck but yesterday the team did amazingly well and I let them down massively at the end. "It has been hard this year and things haven’t really gone our way in the first few days of the Tour. "For sure we are going to try for other stages but thank God it paid off today." It was another fairly relaxed day in the saddle for the General Classification contenders after the chaos of the opening three days. Fabian Cancellara remains in the yellow jersey with Britain's Geraint Thomas in second place, 23 seconds behind. Friday's stage is likely to provide another bunch sprint before the riders head into the Alps for the first mountain stage of this year's tour on Saturday. England’s Howard Webb to referee World Cup final Posted: 08 Jul 2010 11:51 AM PDT English referee Howard Webb has been selected to officiate this Sunday’s World Cup final between the Netherlands and Spain. The Premier League official has refereed three games at the tournament so far. The 38-year-old began his World Cup campaign officiating Switzerland’s shock 1-0 victory over Spain in the opening game of Group H. Webb, hailing from Yorkshire, also took control of Slovakia’s 3-2 win against reigning champions Italy. In the second round Webb refereed Brazil’s 3-0 demolition of Chile. He has handed out an average of 5.6 bookings per game and is yet to produce a red card in South Africa. Webb will become the first Englishman to officiate the World Cup final since Jack Taylor in 1974. It has been an encouraging year for English officials. In May, Webb and his two assistants Michael Mullarkey and Darren Cann, were picked to referee the Champions League final in Madrid. And both Cann and Mullarkey will join Webb on Sunday for the final in Johannesburg. The rising reputation of English referees is welcome news in the wake of Graham Poll’s high-profile error in the 2006 World Cup where he famously handed out three yellow cards to Croatian player Šimunić before finally dismissing the player. Webb now has the opportunity to cement his reputation as one of world football’s top referees. Barça continue Fàbregas chase despite failing to pay players Posted: 08 Jul 2010 03:04 AM PDT New Barcelona club president Sandro Rossell has revealed that the Catalan club failed to pay their players at the end of June. But Rossell, who still maintains that the club can bring Cesc Fàbregas to the Camp Nou this summer, says a £125m loan has been secured in order to pay wages. “We found a club in debt, with liquidity problems. At this point we have to take a loan to pay the wages of the players,” he told Sport. “The banks know that we have a business plan that will allow them to recover the money. The club is not bankrupt because it generates income,” he added. “The members shouldn’t be afraid because it is under control. We must resolve this tension.” The club recently sold defender Dmitro Chygrynskiy to Shakhtar Donetsk and Yaya Toure to Manchester City for a combined total of about £22.5m. Speaking about the possibility of signing Fàbregas, Rossell said: “It’s now or never. We’ll do it fast. It won’t be protracted. “I’ll try to see Wenger in South Africa, then we’ll tell you what happens. “We would not pay the 50-60m euros that I have read about. If Arsenal do not go crazy, he might play at Barca. “There will be 50m euros to sign more players. This is the case every year. This is our plan for the future.
