Reports: Martin Jol agrees deal to become Fulham boss

Posted: 17 Jul 2010 12:02 PM PDT

Martin Jol looks set to be announced as Fulham’s new manager as
widespread reports claim the Ajax boss has ‘agreed terms’ with the
London club.
The former Tottenham Hotspur boss has accepted a £1.5 million-a-year
deal to take over at Craven Cottage, according to ESPN Soccernet.

The same source on Wednesday revealed that the 54-year-old was the
front-runner in Fulham’s search for Roy Hodgson’s successor and further
reports in the British media now claim the Dutchman will be confirmed
as the club’s new manager no later than Monday.

Jol took over at Ajax in May 2009 and although his side were beaten to
the Eredivisie title by Steve McClaren’s FC Twente last season, they
secured Champions League qualification with a second-place finish.

The Dutchman was sacked by Tottenham Hotspur in 2007 after three years
in charge at White Hart Lane.

Jacques Villeneuve set for F1 comeback as team owner

Posted: 17 Jul 2010 11:27 AM PDT

Jacques Villeneuve is set to launch his own team alongside two
controversial figures from the world of Formula 1.
The former world champion made it known earlier in the week that he was
looking to return to the sport as a team owner, but few details were
given about his financial backing.

It has now emerged that technical director Pat Symonds and disgraced
former Renault boss Flavio Briatore are to aid the Canadian in his bid
to become the 13th F1 team.

Both Briatore and Symonds are banned from being directly involved in F1
until 2013 due to their involvement in the ‘crashgate’ scandal, but
could operate in the background bringing people together to head up the
Villeneuve project, with a view to joining in an official capacity when
their ban expires.

So far, Villeneuve has jumped through every FIA hoop in place to become
an F1 team, and is expected to be one of the shortlisted names on the
FIA's entry list ahead of their announcement at the end of this month.

Villeneuve had previously tried to come back to F1 with the Serbian
Stefan GP project last year following the collapse of USF1, but their
entry was too late to take the grid in time for March.

Unlike the Stefan GP team, Villeneuve can boast a UK-based
infrastructure. It is understood that personnel from the former Arrows
and Super Aguri team are likely to see the team based at Leafield, near
Witney in Oxfordshire, the site of the Arrows development centre and
later Super Aguri's headquarters.

French GP2 team ART had been favourites to take the 13th place but
withdrew citing "insufficient financial guarantees".

Villeneuve Racing's other contenders are believed to be Basque-based
Epsilon Euskadi, Italian GP2 team Durango, or the mysterious American
Cypher Group.

Epislon Euskadi have experience in other forms of motorsport, including
Le Mans, World Series by Renault, and Formula Renault. Team principal
Joan Villadelprat has over 30 years experience in F1 including time
with McLaren, Ferrari, and Benneton.

Durango are an experienced Formula 3000 and GP2 team and have been in
motorsport since the early 1980s. Recent graduates to F1 include Virgin
Racing's Lucas di Grassi and Hispania's Karun Chandhok, but they have
suffered financial problems in recent years.

The Cypher Group is behind the rebirth of USF1—albeit without Ken
Anderson and Peter Windsor—but little is known about the new backers
and whether they can provide suitable infrastructure to make the grid.

The USF1 team is now disqualified from FIA-sanctioned events following
their failure to take the grid in 2010 and it seems unlikely that the
governing body would allow Cypher to take the grid without officials
visiting their facilities at an early stage.

Villeneuve has a good chance of becoming the 13th team. His main rivals
are Epsilon Euskadi, whose experience in motorsport racing coupled with
the experience of Villadelprat and Sergio Rinland in F1 could be enough
to defeat him on this occasion.

Rumours have suggested that Durango could drop out and go into
partnership with Villeneuve, with staff transferring to Leafield.

I want to stay, insists Juventus playmaker Diego

Posted: 17 Jul 2010 08:31 AM PDT

Brazilian playmaker Diego Ribas da Cunha has underlined his commitment
to Juventus.
In an interview with Sky Italia the 25-year-old said: “I want to stay
at Juventus, and if I am here it is because the club shares my same
thought.”

There has been a steady stream of rumours linking the Brazilian with a
move away from Turin, but the former Werder Bremen star quashed the
false stories.

“Does the news of negotiations that involve me bother me? Yes,
especially when you write lies,” he said.

There has been debate in Italy over whether Diego will be able to build
a playing partnership with Juventus legend Alessandro Del Piero.

Earlier this week, newly-appointed manager Luigi Delneri suggested that
the pair were in direct competition for a place in his starting eleven,
but the player disagrees.

“We can play together,” he said. “He (Del Piero) is a great player and
person”.

The midfielder, who cost Juventus €24.5 million, did not make Brazil’s
World Cup squad, but believes that consistent club form will prove the
catalyst for selection in the national side.

“I think I can find a place but it is time to think about Juventus,”
added the Brazilian, who has 33 caps.

“The National team will be a consequence of return to club form.”

Inter’s Balotelli is a gamble worth taking for English clubs

Posted: 17 Jul 2010 08:12 AM PDT

Internazionale’s Mario Balotelli may be a disagreeable teenager but he
is also one of the most coveted young prospects in Europe.
In recent weeks the 19-year-old has attracted the attention of a host
of top clubs including Manchester City and Manchester United. Inter
president Massimo Moratti has placed an enormous £30 million price tag
on his uncapped protégé.

So why is Balotelli so highly-rated amongst European football’s elite?

Born in Palermo to Ghanaian parents, ‘Super Mario’ burst onto the scene
in 2008 when he gained national stardom with a thrilling brace against
Juventus in a Coppa Italia quarter-final.

The then 17-year-old shrugged his shoulders in celebration. The
self-belief in abundance was already evident for all those witnessing
the beginning of a new phenomenon.

Balotelli swiftly became the name on everyone’s lips in Italy. Equally
adept at scoring goals and creating them for team-mates, he had the
talent to rival AC Milan’s highly-rated Brazilian, Alexandre Pato.

But since his blistering display against La Vecchia Donna, the exciting
19-year-old failed to hold down a starting place under both Roberto
Mancini and his successor José Mourinho.

Nevertheless he has managed to increase his goal tally year-on-year.
His highest so far, 11, coming during Inter’s treble-winning season.

In addition to his strikes during the 2009-10 campaign, Balotelli also
notched up eight assists in all competitions, underlining his
importance as a team player.

One of his most crucial strikes came in the Serie A title race this
year when Inter traveled to Udinese.

Within three minutes the Udine team seized the initiative to take a 1-0
lead. But moments later Balotelli unleashed a stinging shot from
outside the box to level the match and provide Mourinho’s team with the
platform to push on and seal a vital 3-1 victory.

The striker is yet to make his full debut for Italy’s national team
despite being described as “the future of the Nerazzurri and Italy” by
former manager Marcello Lippi.

He was unable to represent the Azzurri at U-15 and U-17 level as he was
still considered a Ghanaian immigrant. He did, however, play for the
U-21s at the European Championships last year.

During Italy’s opening game against Sweden, Balotelli opened the
scoring within 15 minutes. Unfortunately, later in the same match one
of the 19-year-old’s major flaws, his petulance, surfaced and was shown
a straight red card for retaliation.

Previously labelled as a “child” by Inter’s Dejan Stankovic, the
tantrum-prone Balotelli incurred the wrath of Mourinho on several
occasions.

He also famously angered Inter fans when he admitted to being an AC
Milan fan at a charity event and later sported the shirt of his team’s
bitter rivals on an Italian television comedy show.

He then further aggravated his own supporters when he threw his shirt
to the ground after being jeered by his home fans following a
lacklustre performance against Barcelona in the Champions League.

There is clearly little doubt that should a move to Manchester United
materialise, Balotelli would represent a unique challenge for Sir Alex
Ferguson.

Moulding the fiery teenager into a world class forward would represent
one of Ferguson’s greatest feats. The 19-year-old clearly has the raw
materials to become a modern day great but his temperament could prove
a hindrance to success.

His self belief often bubbles over into sheer arrogance, but Ferguson
could well be the man to temper Balotelli’s cocky attitude. Roberto
Mancini on the other hand, is a keen admirer and already has experience
of working with the 19-year-old.

At 6ft3 Balotelli is an imposing figure and coupled with an eye for
scoring spectacular goals and the ability to involve team-mates, he
represents a gamble worth taking for Ferguson or Mancini should they be
willing to match Moratti’s hefty valuation.

And if Balotelli can harness his destructive attitude, he possesses the
natural ability to truly become ‘Super Mario’.

Hispania Racing drop Karun Chandhok for German GP‎

Posted: 17 Jul 2010 04:37 AM PDT

Hispania Racing have dropped Karun Chandhok for the German Grand Prix a
week after team-mate Bruno Senna went the same way.
The Indian driver will be replaced by Sakon Yamamoto in Hockenheim, the
man who took Senna's seat for the British Grand Prix at Silverstone
last week.

Initial rumours from the paddock suggested an e-mail critical of HRT
team boss Colin Kolles from Senna was to blame for the Brazilian's
omission, but a late statement at the race from Kolles revealed Senna
would return, with many pundits saying he was back for the rest of the
season.

But there was scepticism over whether he would be back for every race,
with HRT also having Yamamoto and Red Bull's Christian Klien on their
books, and short of money to fulfil their obligations.

While most expect that Senna will compete in most of the races until
the end of the season, there will be times when he, like Chandhok, will
have to step aside as the other drivers can provide a welcome cash
boost to the team through personal sponsors.

There is also a very real threat that one or both drivers could be
dropped in favour of replacements who can bring more money to the team
through sponsors.

Yamamoto is one driver who is financially well-backed, which would
explain his inclusion at Silverstone and Hockenheim, while Mexican GP2
driver Sergio Pérez, a target for Virgin Racing next season, and backed
by billionaire Telmex owner Carlos Slim, could also be in line for a
drive.

Hispania have been the slowest of the new teams so far this season as a
lack of funding has prevented them from developing their car as much as
fellow new boys Lotus or Virgin Racing.

The team were rumoured to have purchased parts from Toyota's old
chassis, but with a lack of available funds, it is not clear how much
truth is in the story. Regularly bringing in well-backed drivers could
go some way to remedying that.

Indeed, it has been suggested that Yamamoto's inclusion over the two
races would pay for significant parts to aid the development of the
team's 2011 car.

New Zealand seal back-to-back victories over Springboks

Posted: 17 Jul 2010 03:58 AM PDT

New Zealand produced a fantastic defensive display to beat South Africa
31-17 in Wellington to make it two wins from two in this year's Tri
Nations.
Tries from Ma'a Nonu, Mils Muliaina, Rene Ranger and a superb solo
effort from Israel Dagg, secured a second bonus point victory in as
many outings for the All Blacks.

The Springboks were under pressure early on as the ill discipline of
last week reared its head. Lock Danie Rossouw, in for the suspended
Bakkies Botha, was sin binned for an innocuous run in with Richie McCaw.

The man advantage once again paid off almost immediately with some
expansive running from Number eight Kieren Read Nonu allowing the
latter to go over with a pick up and push after good rucking from
Muliaina.

Daniel Carter missed the conversion as the All Blacks really started to
take control and in the 12th minute, Piri Weepu left Gurthrö Steenkamp
for dust and looped a perfect pass out wide to Muliaina, who made no
mistake to seal his 26th career try.

Carter finally landed a kick with his fourth attempt mid way through
the first half to open a 13-point lead for his side.

The Springbok line-out finally fired as the quick ball off the top put
in Jean De Villiers who allowed Roussouw to make amends for his earlier
indiscretions to put his side back in the hunt at the break.

The Springboks started the second half brightly. Morne Steyn slotted
home a penalty to reduce the deficit to just three but a superb first
test try for Rene Ranger followed almost immediately.

Good work from Carter and Conrad Smith left Ranger through to touch
down in the corner. Referee Alain Rolland went to the TMO, who
confirmed a legitimate touchdown.

After having missed five kicks on the night, Carter gave the kicking
duties to Weepu who, in front of his home crowd, duly slotted home to
open up an 11-point lead.

The All Blacks managed to weather the storm having been pinned in their
own half for a prolonged period.

But completely against the run of play, replacement Israel Dagg
produced an impressive solo effort to break the Springboks’ fight and
ultimately put the game to bed.

Dagg ran a perfect diagonal line, cutting past Pierre Spies and
breaking a Schalk Burger tackle before leaving Kichner behind to hand
his side the bonus point.

The All Blacks now have a break after the perfect opening to their
campaign while the Springboks’ tough start will continue when they
travel to Brisbane as Australia make their first showing of this year’s
tournament.

British Open 2010: Round two goes to Louis Oosthuizen

Posted: 17 Jul 2010 03:40 AM PDT

At the second round of the British Open at St Andrews the scores—and
the wind—were a little more typical of an afternoon on the Old Course.
But the one player in round two who apparently thought he was still
playing an easy golf course was South African Louis Oosthuizen.
Oosthuizen, who shot a 67, went out early before the winds really
picked up.

First round leader Rory McIlroy had a disastrous day, shooting an 80 on
Friday after his first round record-tying score of 63.

The winds picked up so much that play was suspended for an hour at
1400BST. Because of the delay everyone did not finish on Friday, and
about 30 players will have to finish up their second rounds this
morning.

Oosthuizen leads at 12 under, five shots ahead of past British Open
champion and senior golfer Mark Calcavecchia, who is seven under. A
group of four golfers at six under includes Paul Casey and Lee Westwood.

Westwood, playing with a ruptured muscle in his right calf, played well
again, shooting a 71 to follow up his 67.

Tiger Woods shot a one over 73 and is contention at four under, in a
tie for 15th. Phil Mickelson shot a one under 71, and will make the cut
at even par.

The cut line figures to be one over when everyone completes their
second round this morning.

The 27-year-old Oosthuizen is used to playing in tough conditions in
South Africa. He won first the first time in Europe earlier this year.
Yet, considering all this, he is still a surprise leader.

"I'm very confident with the way I'm playing," he said
afterwards. "It's probably the position anyone wants to be in playing a
major on the weekend, and I think it's what we work to achieve."

Oosthuizen missed the cut at the Masters and the US Open. In fact, he
missed the cut last week at the Scottish Open.

He now has the position of being the leader heading into the weekend at
the Open.
