Bordeaux’s Yoann Gourcuff set for €22m Lyon switch

Posted: 23 Aug 2010 04:51 PM PDT

France playmaker Yoann Gourcuff is set to join Olympique Lyon from
Bordeaux after the two clubs agreed on a €22m fee for the highly-rated
24-year-old.
The skilful midfielder will sign a long-term contract with his new
Ligue 1 club when he passes a medical this week, Lyon confirmed on
Monday. The initial fee of €22m could rise by a further €4.5m should
Lyon sell the Ploemeur-born player to another club.

“Lyon welcome the arrival of Yoann Gourcuff, who was the main target of
coach Claude Puel and will give the team a new dimension in midfield,”
read a statement made by Lyon.

Gourcuff, who has won 22 caps for France, was voted Ligue 1 Player of
the Year in 2009. He made 94 appearances during his two-year spell with
Bordeaux after joining from AC Milan.

Touted as France’s next Zinedine Zidane, Gourcuff had attracted
interest from the likes of Manchester City and Arsenal, but
disappointed at the World Cup in South Africa.

Red Bull’s Mark Webber hints at F1 exit in event of title

Posted: 23 Aug 2010 04:16 PM PDT

Mark Webber has revealed he would be unsure over his long-term
involvement in Formula 1 should he manage to win the world championship
before 2012.
As one of the older drivers on the grid, Webber signed only a one-year
contract extension earlier this year to see him through to the end of
2011. The Aussie has recorded four wins from the opening 12 races to
lead the championship going into the Belgian Grand Prix this weekend.

For Red Bull the decision will depend on Webber's performances and his
desire to win at the age of 35, but they are not short of options if he
decides to call it a day. Talented Swiss youngster Sébastien Buemi is
waiting in the wings at sister team Toro Rosso, while Brit Paul di
Resta has also shown promise in free practice and will look to enter F1
in 2011 or 2012.

"I cannot guarantee that my head will be in the same place in 2012,"
Webber told Esporte Espetacular. "For sure I want to go for the
championship. I know that it changes people’s lives, changes the person
and I want to know how it feels."

Webber also hinted that when his time in F1 does end, he could see
himself mentoring young people who expect little from their life before
retiring to Australia.

"I want them to realise that they can dream higher and achieve," he
said. "Maybe I will do a little mountain climbing, who knows.

"I'll definitely do some more sporting challenges before I get too old
and return to Australia to drink red wine."

Webber leads the world championship with 161 points to Lewis Hamilton's
157 with seven races remaining.

Liverpool chasing Trezeguet’s signature, claims agent

Posted: 23 Aug 2010 04:01 PM PDT

David Trezeguet’s agent has revealed Liverpool are amongst the parties
interested in securing his client’s signature before the transfer
window closes next Tuesday.
Reports in the Italian media suggested Roy Hodgson has made an enquiry
for the Juventus’ forward with the Reds boss keen to add more
experience to an already-stretched attacking line-up.

French international Trezeguet has struggled to retain a regular
starting place in recent seasons. The 32-year-old has fallen behind
Amauri, Alessandro Del Piero and Vincenzo Iaquinta in the pecking order
at Juventus.

“An interest of Liverpool? There are requests, not just of Liverpool,”
said Trezeguet’s representative, Antonio Caliendo.

“In Spain there is the interest of Real Zaragoza and Hercules. We are
considering [offers], today is a day of reflection, we will know more
tomorrow.”

The news comes after Liverpool midfielder Alberto Aquilani returned to
Serie A when he joined Juventus on a season-long loan.

Tévez double sinks Liverpool at City of Manchester Stadium

Posted: 23 Aug 2010 03:40 PM PDT

BARCLAYS PREMIER LEAGUE, 23 August 2010 Manchester City 3 Liverpool 0
Manchester City highlighted their title credentials with a dominant
victory over Liverpool as a Carlos Tévez brace and a Gareth Barry
strike led them to their first win of the new campaign.
A lacklustre Liverpool failed to compete with their dominant hosts who
controlled the game in front of their on-watching owner, Sheikh Mansour
bin Zayed Al Nahyan. In particular Adam Johnson and new signing James
Milner sparkled in the wide areas of the pitch.

The pair combined to unlock Liverpool’s defence within 13 minutes. An
intelligent ball by Johnson was smartly collected by Milner who turned
past makeshift left-back Daniel Agger and promptly squared to Gareth
Barry, who stroked his effort past Pepe Reina.

Indeed, the midfield was the key battleground at Eastlands and the
packed quintet of Nigel De Jong, Barry, Yaya Toure, Milner and Johnson
over-swarmed a lightweight Liverpool team.

Roy Hodgson dropped want-away Argentine Javier Mascherano with Lucas
selected as his replacement while Steven Gerrard continued in central
midfield as opposed to supporting Fernando Torres up front. It was an
attacking line-up but Hodgson’s decision failed to pay dividends.

City had escaped with a point at White Hart Lane on the opening day
courteusy of heroic defending led by the immaculate Joe Hart. And the
England international was in splendid form once more as he denied
Torres and N’Gog with a string of smart saves.

The visitors rallied early in the second half but their improved
display was soon brought to a halt as City extended their lead. Micah
Richards rose highest from a right-wing corner and headed past Reina —
the Spanish keeper distracted by the presence of Tévez.

Gerrard attempted to propel his team towards an unlikely comeback and
forced Hart into a full-stretch save with N’Gog and Torres both
spurning subsequent chances from the rebound. However the match was
over as a contest with 23 minutes remaining.

Martin Skrtel’s rash challenge on Johnson saw referee Phil O’Dowd award
a penalty which Tévez emphatically swept past Reina.

City boss Roberto Mancini was understandably delighted with his side’s
display.

“I thought we played well,” he said. “We need time to gel and improve
because we were missing four or five important players.

“But the team played with a good mentality. If they play with a good
mentality I think we can beat every team. We beat a strong team like
Liverpool, who can fight for the title.”

“This win helped us believe in ourselves and this is important.”

Wimbledon relaxes its dress code for 2012 Olympics

Posted: 23 Aug 2010 06:18 AM PDT

Players competing at the Olympic tennis tournament at Wimbledon in 2012
will not be forced to wear white.
The traditional requirement for players to wear all-white outfits at
The Championships at SW19 is one of the prestigious Grand Slam
tournament’s unique aspects.

But the clothing rule will be lifted for the Olympic tournament in two
year’s time, which is due to run from 28 July to 5 August.

“It will be its own competition, have its own style and it will play
out in its very own way,” said Ian Ritchie, the All England Lawn Tennis
Club’s chief executive.

“The idea was never to have a repeat of the Championships. And so, with
regards to the players’ kits, we are perfectly happy for there to be
some colour.”

The 2012 Olympic event will take place just 20 days after the
conclusion of the year’s Championships, with the London Games set to
see the introduction of mixed doubles for the first time.

It will be the second time that the All England Club has hosted an
Olympic tournament after it first did so during the 1908 Games.
Wimbledon was not used as a venue during The 1948 Games in London.

Paul Casey relying on captain’s pick for Ryder Cup spot

Posted: 23 Aug 2010 05:41 AM PDT

Englishman Paul Casey must now rely on a captain's pick from Colin
Montgomerie if he is to take his place in the European team for the
upcoming Ryder Cup at Celtic Manor.
A victory for Sweden's Peter Hanson at the Czech Open on Sunday has
seen Casey drop out of the standings for automatic qualification.

Casey has no chance of getting back into the top nine as he will be
absent from the final qualifying event at Gleneagles this week.

Hanson's triumphed at the second play-off hole to push himself into 8th
place in the points table, just in front of Spain's Miguel Angel
Jimenez.

Past Ryder Cup players Luke Donald, Padraig Harrington and Justin Rose
will also be missing from the final qualifying event, with all of them
sitting outside the top nine.

Promising Italian Eduardo Molinari is also outside the qualifying
places meaning that Captain Monty will be forced to leave at least two
big name players behind.

Meanwhile, Englishman Simon Dyson and Spain's Alvaro Quiros could still
book their places automatically if either of them were to win at this
week's Johnnie Walker Championship, while a top-two finish would Ross
McGowan would also be good enough.

It should prove to be a fascinating week.

Balotelli can be better than Torres, claims Mancini

Posted: 23 Aug 2010 01:56 AM PDT

Manchester City manager Roberto Mancini has declared that new signing
Mario Balotelli has the ability to outshine Liverpool’s Fernando Torres.
Balotelli completed his £24m switch to Eastlands from Inter Milan last
week after signing a five-year deal with the Italian’s City side.

And the former Inter boss, who worked with the 20-year-old striker
during his time at the San Siro, claims Balotelli’s adaptability will
help transform him into one of the world’s best.

“I think that Balotelli could be as good as Torres and even better than
him,” Mancini said. “That’s because Torres can only play as a striker.
Balotelli can play as a striker and as a winger. He has a different
attitude from Torres. But what is sure is that we are talking about two
fantastic players.”

Balotelli is expected to make his Premier League debut tonight when Roy
Hodgson’s Liverpool visit the City of Mancester Stadium.

Mancini added: “I saw him four years ago when I was at Inter Milan. He
was 16 or 17.

“It was the last five games of the Serie A championship. We had
(Zlatan) Ibrahimovic injured and we played Mario inside and he played
like someone who was 30 years old.

“That’s because he has good technique, he has everything. Yes, he is a
good signing for us.”

Top 14: Weekend of upsets as Stade Français move top

Posted: 23 Aug 2010 01:01 AM PDT

The second round of the Top 14 threw up several surprises, with Bayonne
and Stade Français the only teams to make it two wins out of two.
The Parisians, who suffered a nightmare season last time around,
managed 40 points for the second week in a row, but were far from
convincing in their 41-26 win over newly promoted La Rochelle.

The team from the capital trailed 14-10 at the break, but three tries
in five minutes broke the visitors' resistance, the third a fanstastic
individual effort from Julien Arias. However, La Rochelle were able to
score a third try of their own late on to deny the hosts a bonus point,
with Thomas Combezou scoring his second of the afternoon.

Bayonne's second victory was more straightforward as they hammered the
other promoted side Agen 27-0. The score was probably a little harsh on
the visitors, but the Basques will be delighted, especially with the
late try from Lionel Mazars that allowed them to claim the attacking
bonus point.

A week ago, Toulon suffered a rare loss at home, but seven days later,
it was the team from the South coast who inflicted a surprise home
defeat on Biarritz, 13-3. The only try of the game came from a surprise
source as Kris Chesney went over after confusion in the Biarritz
defence from a dropped high ball.

The home side will be worried about their lack of incisiveness going
into two away games at Agen and Perpignan. Meanwhile, Toulon, for whom
Jonny Wilkinson added eight points, will take confidence before they
entertain Racing-Métro at Mayol.

Champions Clermont avoided a shock defeat at Bourgoin as three tries in
the last ten minutes allowed them to win 25-12. Having beaten Clermont
last week, Perpignan were not able to repeat the feat this week as they
went down 26-11 at Brive, with Gerhard Vosloo scoring a stunning try
for the hosts. Racing also slipped to defeat at Montpellier, conceding
a late try to lose 36-19. Having taken the lead early on, Sébastien
Chabal's side were comprehensively outplayed, with centre Geoffrey
Doumayrou scoring a hat-trick for the hosts.

The final game of the weekend, on Saturday evening, saw European
champions Toulouse lose away to last year's surprise package Castres,
22-16. Guy Novès' side struggled early on conceding a string of
penalties before Chris Masoe went over for the first try of the game.

The visitors came back into the game, and a late try from Sylvain
Nicolas allowed them to take a defensive bonus point, but they made far
too many handling errors to hope to win the game. With a match against
Stade Français next week, Toulouse will hope for a big improvement to
extend their unbeaten run against the side from the capital to seven
matches.
