Trott and Broad were able to rescue England from 102-7 with their lengthy partnership of 244, both ending the day unbeaten. Earlier, Amir had become the youngest bowler to reach 50 wickets in Test cricket as he blew away the England middle order with Kevin Pietersen, Paul Collingwood and Eoin Morgan all departing without scoring. This was the first time in England's test history that numbers four to six have all failed to score during an innings. Resuming the second day on 39-1, the Pakistani attack began perfectly as Alastair Cook, Pietersen and Collingwood were all removed without adding a run to the overnight score. Amir's exceptional control was the highlight, leaving the majority of England's batsman to edge helplessly to a grateful slip cordon who, today, took their chances. However, Trott remained typically stubborn and his unflappable nature saw him prevail through a trying spell from Mohammad Asif and a verbal barrage from the Akmal brothers Kamran and Umar. Broad built on his fine form from The Oval to offer vital support to Trott and bring up his maiden Test hundred late in the day. His aggressive innings, including 11 boundaries, eased the pressure on Trott who was therefore allowed to drop anchor. England ended the day on 346-7, Trott unbeaten on 149 and Broad 125 not out. A dramatic turn-around now places the match momentum firmly with England despite such an appalling start. Ferrari’s Fernando Alonso sets pace in second Spa practice Posted: 27 Aug 2010 04:51 PM PDT SPA-FRANCORCHAMPS – Fernando Alonso set a stunning final lap to deny Force India's Adrian Sutil the quickest time in second free practice for the Belgian Grand Prix. It was a bizarre session which was red-flagged towards the end after Race Control reported that there "may be spectators in a dangerous area" with Sutil top of the time sheet with a 1:49.157. Teams had waited all day for a dry track but as it finally began to clear up, drivers were once again left frustrated as the Race Control car was dispatched to ensure safety was maintained. They then had to wait for the green light at the end of the pit lane before they could make their final assault with just three minutes remaining – over 10 minutes lost because of children climbing on the safety fence. Alonso and Massa were the first out and ran close throughout. Alonso, however, was significantly quicker in the twisty middle sector to lap 0.6 seconds quicker than his team-mate with a time of 1:49.032. As with the first session, the second was determined by the changeable weather in the Ardennes region. Toro Rosso's Jaime Alguersauri was the guinea pig for slicks, lapping almost three seconds quicker for his bravery, and was quickly followed and the lap times duly tumbled. But if drivers thought the second session would be easier than the first, they were very much mistaken. Force India's Vitantonio Liuzzi and Virgin Racing's Timo Glock were caught out within a corner of each other as the former went into the barrier at Rivage, before escaping to the pits. Glock's session, meanwhile, ended after a collision with the barrier at turn nine after just three laps. Lewis Hamilton took third for McLaren behind Alonso and Sutil, and ahead of Robert Kubica and Felipe Massa, while championship leader Mark Webber could manage just 18th quickest – two seconds slower than team-mate Sebastian Vettel in sixth, and the last of the established teams. Jenson Button was seventh in the second McLaren ahead of Sauber's Pedro de la Rosa. Rubens Barrichello continued his good running for Williams to land ninth ahead of de la Rosa's team-mate Kamui Kobayashi. Michael Schumacher was four-hundredths of a second quicker than team-mate Nico Rosberg as he took 12th for Mercedes behind the second Renault of Vitaly Petrov. Heikki Kovalainen improved after a disappointing first session to lap quickest for the new teams ahead of Lotus team-mate Jarno Trulli, who was comfortably quicker than Virgin's Lucas di Grassi. Atlético Madrid contain Inter Milan to win UEFA Super Cup Posted: 27 Aug 2010 04:42 PM PDT UEFA SUPER CUP, 27 August 2010 Inter Milan 0 Atlético Madrid 2 MONACO – Former Arsenal winger José Antonio Reyes was named man of the match as Atlético Madrid overcame Inter Milan to win a UEFA Super Cup title at the first time of asking. Reyes opened the scoring for Los Rojiblancos in the 62nd minute when his persevering charge towards Julio Cesar’s goal afforded him the time and space to slot a low effort past the Brazilian stopper. Poor defending, clinical finish. Sergio Aguero then doubled the La Liga side’s lead when Simão’s tantalising low pass across the six-yard box left the Argentine striker with a simple tap-in. Rafael Benítez’s Inter were handed some late hope after Raúl García brought down Goran Pandeev in the penalty area, but newly-crowned European Player of the Year Diego Milito missed the resulting spot-kick and the chance to set up a tense ending. The Europa League holders held on to seal another UEFA title. The clash was a tactical affair, with both sides taking time to settle into a first half that lacked major incident. The second period was livelier, but ultimately Atlético contained Benítez’s cautious team with an efficiency that will worry the Spanish coach – the Serie A champions only managing to muster up two shots on target despite edging the possession. All in all, it was a night to remember for the Atlético fans, who deserve credit for bringing the stadium to life when matters on the pitch were less inspiring – and it was a case of ‘job done’ according to ex-Gunner Reyes. “We played extremely well and as a team we did what we set out to do,” said Reyes. “It was a hard match but we played at our best. “It was a tremendous feeling scoring the goal – all players dream about that. I am very pleased, not only about the goal but the match as a whole and the team’s performance.” Atlético coach Quique Sanchez Flores added: “This brings great joy to our fans and I must say we played very well and deserved to win. I was very satisfied.” Steven Gerrard braced for ‘tough’ Europa League tests Posted: 27 Aug 2010 07:19 AM PDT Steven Gerrard has warned that Liverpool will face stern competition in their Europa League group, but remains confident his side can progress to the knock-out phase. The Reds were drawn with Italian side Napoli, Romania's Steaua Bucharest and Utrecht of the Netherlands in Group K on Friday ahead of a new season of European action. “It’s a strong group and I’m certainly looking forward to the games,” Gerrard, 30, told Liverpool’s website. “The media will make us early favourites I’m sure, because of our experience in the Champions League and last year in the Europa League. “I’m confident we can get out of the group but it will be tough. The draw has given us some difficult challenges.” And the England midfielder was quick to stress he believes Liverpool’s priority this season should be attaining the highest-possible finish in the Premier League. “I don’t think the Europa League is the priority,” he added. “Everybody knows that our league position, where we finish at the end of this year, is the priority. “But it’s another trophy, it’s a big cup. We haven’t won a trophy for four years now so it’s important we put a good show on in all the cup competitions and try to reward the fans with a final.” Liverpool kick off their European campaign at Anfield against Steaua Bucharest on 16 September, with Roy Hodgson's men then travelling to Italy for their clash with Napoli on 21 October. Formula 1: Fernando Alonso quickest in first Spa practice Posted: 27 Aug 2010 06:28 AM PDT SPA-FRANCORCHAMPS – Ferrari’s Fernando Alonso was quickest in opening practice for the Belgian Grand Prix in a rain-disrupted session in Spa. The sport returned from its four-week summer break with much anticipation ahead of one of the most popular race weekends of the year – with five drivers still in contention for the title with seven races to go. Alonso set the benchmark half-way through the 90-minute session before the rain worsened and all but ended any competitive running until, with 10 minutes to go, blue skies finally replaced the dark clouds. Changeable weather is almost a guarantee at Spa-Francorchamps and Friday was no different; the circuit remained treacherous, catching out Felipe Massa, Nico Hülkenberg, and Heikki Kovalainen. But as track conditions improved, Alonso went quicker again in his Ferrari to record a time of 2:00.797 – eight tenths quicker than McLaren's Lewis Hamilton. Robert Kubica, featuring Renault's F-duct for the first time, nicked third-quickest for Renault from Sebastian Vettel with minutes to go, just 1.2 seconds slower than Alonso. He was followed by Red Bull's Sebastian Vettel, and Force India's Adrian Sutil fifth. Jenson Button just pipped Mark Webber to finish sixth-quickest for McLaren – 2.1 seconds slower than Alonso from just six completed laps. Sauber rookie Kamui Kobayashi was 2.6 seconds off Alonso's time, just ahead of anniversary boy Rubens Barrichello with ninth-quickest at his 300th grand prix, and Barrichello's former team-mate Michael Schumacher, who rounded out the top 10. Virgin Racing got one over on newcomer rivals Lotus Racing as both Timo Glock and Lucas di Grassi outpaced Jarno Trulli, while Bruno Senna finished ahead of Heikki Kovalainen for Hispania with Sakon Yamamoto once again bringing up the rear. Sunderland unimpressive, but Bent gets the job done Posted: 27 Aug 2010 03:25 AM PDT Sunderland finally got their season up and running on Tuesday evening. But their 2-0 victory in the Carling Cup over Colchester United, courtesy of a Darren Bent brace, will have done little to allay ever increasing fears on Wearside that Steve Bruce's side will struggle to better last season's 13th place finish in the Premier League. In his programme notes prior to the game, club chairman Niall Quinn offered his apologies for not being present at the game; Quinn being part of the entourage that has this week welcomed FIFA representatives to the north-east, in the hope of the 2018 World Cup being hosted in England. In hindsight, the FA and the rest of the nation will be glad those representatives chose not to take in this match at the Stadium of Light. Indeed, the 13,532 who did turn up will perhaps wish they themselves had been elsewhere. Whilst the result was never in doubt following Bent's second goal of the evening, the Englishman profiting from opposing goalkeeper Mark Cousins spilling a routine cross, Sunderland were largely unimpressive. Bruce will have been dismayed at his side's inability to retain possession against such supposedly inferior opponents, as well the Black Cats' frustrating tendency to resort to route one tactics on a regular basis. Fortunately, as he so often has been since signing from Tottenham in August 2009, Bent was on hand to bail out his teammates. However, whilst it is his job to score goals, one wonders how disastrous an injury to the man who put away 24 of them last season would be to the Wearsiders. As for the visitors, despite the defeat, manager Jon Ward will have been heartened by his side's performance. The U's frontman Kayode Odejayi, signed in the summer from Barnsley, was a potent threat, causing Titus Bramble particular difficulties. Ward told the BBC following the game that his side will go away from this game with "the confidence that we can play at this level." And so, the end of the road for Colchester, whilst Sunderland will now look for a favourable third round draw. With little more to aim for in the league than mid-table mediocrity, a good cup run could be just the tonic for Bruce's men. They will certainly need to improve if one is to be forthcoming. Inter captain Javier Zanetti targeting Super Cup triumph Posted: 27 Aug 2010 03:00 AM PDT MONACO – It has been a record breaking few months for Inter Milan. The Serie A giants at last sealed the Champions League title that had evaded them for so long – but not before wrapping up the Scudetto and Coppa Italia as they became the first Italian team to ever win the treble. Given their recent achievements, one could be forgiven for assuming that tonight’s UEFA Super Cup clash with Atlético Madrid would be considered as nothing more than a final warm-up for the new season. But not Inter’s veteran captain Javier Zanetti, who has his sights firmly set on adding a further title to the Italian Super Cup his side picked up last week following a 3-1 win over Roma. “It’s a very important final for us,” stressed the 37-year-old Zanetti. “It’s the first time Inter are playing for this trophy and we are here to win, but with respect for a strong opponent.” “We know it won’t be easy but we want to continue on this great path. Forlan and Aguero are certainly two of the strongest opponents tomorrow, so they deserve attention. “I’ve never had the opportunity to win the Super Cup, so of course I am eager to win against Atletico. This will be the first time I have played in this match, so I really want to do well.” Inter’s Italian Super Cup victory over Roma last weekend handed new boss Rafael Benítez his first piece of silverware since taking the reigns from José Mourinho earlier in the summer, and the Spaniard acknowledges that the opportunity to add another title in Monaco has arisen thanks to the club’s previous successes. “If we are here it’s because the club did really well before I joined the club, and now we have to exploit the opportunities,” Benitez said on Thursday. “We have been working very hard this past month to get to know each other. Clearly it’s more difficult to enter a final with a new coach. “But we have looked at this final and the games that Atletico Madrid have played in the (Spanish) league, to get all the knowledge about them,” Benitez added. “It’s a difficult match against a rival that is also experienced, but we trust we will be able to win.” Inter’s new domestic season begins on Monday evening with a trip to Bologna before they host Udinese after the international break.
