Former Ferrari engineer sentenced over ‘spy-gate’ saga

Posted: 30 Sep 2010 04:01 PM PDT

Ferrari's former chief mechanic Nigel Stepney has been given a 20-month
prison sentence by an Italian court for his role in the “spy-gate”
scandal.
Ferrari fired Stepney in July 2007 and launched criminal proceedings
accusing him of passing confidential technical data to arch-rivals
McLaren and plotting to sabotage Ferrari's cars.

McLaren were fined a record $100million by the FIA for their part in
the scandal and were kicked out of the constructors' championship after
the Woking-based team were found guilty of possessing a 780-page
Ferrari dossier.

While both teams agreed to put the matter behind them the following
year, Ferrari continued with its criminal action against Stepney.

Local press in Modena reported on Wednesday that Stepney was sentenced
to a 20 months in prison and slapped with a €600 fine for "sabotage,
industrial espionage, sporting fraud and attempted serious injury".

Stepney's lawyer Sonia Bartolini is quoted as saying: "We can be
satisfied, even if my client has always denied sabotage.

"We have to thank the prosecutor for agreeing to a plea bargain.
Initially the sentence was much higher, but I don't want to be
specific."

The FIA had warned its licence holders against working with Stepney or
former McLaren chief designer Mike Coughlan—the man found with the
Ferrari dossier. That stance, however, was relaxed in early 2009 as the
FIA concluded that both men had been "minor players" in the scandal,
with Stepney working in the FIA GT1 Championship for Sumo Power.

La Liga: Sacked Antonio Álvarez was Sevilla’s fall guy

Posted: 30 Sep 2010 03:19 PM PDT

Antonio Álvarez turned out nearly 350 times for Sevilla as a player in
the 1970s and 80s, making him something of a mythical figure in the
eyes of the fans.
As manager, however, the problem with Álvarez was that he was never the
first choice to take over from Manolo Jimenez back in March.

Jimenez's sacking mid-way through the 2009-10 season was the
culmination of a run of five La Liga matches without a win and a
humiliating Champions League exit to CSKA Moscow. Sevilla's chances of
qualifying for the Champions League again were looking decidedly slim
at that point but Álvarez made the transition from Director of Football
smoothly and enjoyed some immediate success.

The Andalusian club eventually pipped Real Mallorca to fourth spot in
the final minute of the final match of the season thanks to that famous
Rodri goal and beat Atletico Madrid in the final of Copa del Rey to
bring some much-coveted silverware to the Ramon Sanchez Pizjuan.

Why then, after five matches of the 2010-11 campaign and a far from
irretrievable seventh position, has Álvarez already been shown the door?

The simple answer: Sevilla President Jose Maria Del Nido never really
wanted him as manager and it was only the club's failure to snare Luis
Aragones that saw Álvarez installed in the first place.

That is the basic underlying motive but certain factors this season
have made it easier for Del Nido—the outspoken Sevilla boss who insists
on wearing a fedora hat so that he resembles a 21st century Al
Capone—to give Álvarez the boot.

The two-legged Champions League play-off defeat to Sporting Braga in
August is the main point of reference. Having worked so hard to claim
4th spot last year, it was galling to then see their place in the group
stages of Europe's premier competition usurped by a Portuguese debutant.

Their exit at that stage also has wider permutations for Spain, who
enjoy the privilege of occupying four spots in the Champions League
thanks to their UEFA coefficient ranking. Fortunately, the continued
success of La Liga teams in Europe – which is rivalled only by the
English Premier League's representatives – means that they are unlikely
to forfeit that privilege in the foreseeable future.

Álvarez's man-management style also came under criticism in his final
weeks at Sevilla and he felt the need to defend himself in a press
conference convened after his dismissal, stating that he did not have
any personal gripes with any of the players at the club.

There is no doubt, however, that perceived dressing-room unrest, which
was reported in the press, unsettled the team. Speculation about a
fall-out with Sevilla's biggest star, Brazilian number 9 Luis Fabiano,
also undermined Álvarez, and if there was no foundation to the rumours,
it seems strange that the striker was left out of the team several
times this month despite an apparent clean bill of health.

Presidential post-match interviews are a Spanish curiosity and a
journalist's dream. Those conducted at the Ramon Sanchez Pizjuan over
the last few weeks have allowed us to see first-hand how Sevilla's
failure to win at home since the Super Cup first leg victory over
Barcelona has infuriated Del Nido.

While performing effectively on the road—excluding the recent Hercules
debacle—defeats to Sporting Braga and Paris Saint-Germain coupled with
draws against Deportivo La Coruna and Racing Santander suggest that the
home quandary is more psychological than anything.

If that is indeed the case, a managerial change was the obvious
solution. And who better to bring in to fix the problem than former
Real Mallorca manager Gregorio Manzano. After a trip to Germany to play
Borussia Dortmund in the Europe League, Manzano's first challenge at
the Ramon Sanchez Pizjuan will be the visit of Atletico Madrid this
weekend in a rematch of last season's Copa del Rey final. A win in that
game would send out a clear message of intent.

Balearic club Mallorca were impeccable on home turf at the Ono Estadi
under Manzano. Last season their record in Palma was the best outside
of the top two in the division, and that is a strength which Jose Maria
Del Nido is hoping Manzano will carry into his new club.

Sevilla still have plenty of time to mount a serious assault on the top
four this season. The benefit of an early change is that no irrevocable
damage has yet been done. The new manager's main task, besides forging
a strong home base, is to reintroduce some harmony into the dressing
room.

Players like Luis Fabiano, who is coveted by top clubs all over Europe,
and Diego Capel, who has not seen nearly enough playing time over the
last couple of seasons, will have to be placated. It would be a shame
if they were forced to sell such stars, even though Sevilla's
world-famous scouting network and academy would almost certainly
produce replacements.

The dream for most local fans is that Sevilla will evolve beyond their
current status as a top-class football factory and shake off the
justifiable moniker that it is essentially a selling club. Football
finance is such, however, that all but a very select handful of
European clubs are precisely that.

For those who are curious, here is what Sevilla might look like if they
had refused big money offers in the last few years:

Sevilla as it might have been:

4-4-2: Andres Palop; Adriano, Sergio Ramos, Pepe, Dani Alves; Seydou
Keita, Christian Poulsen, Jose Antonio Reyes, Jesus Navas; Julio
Baptista, Luis Fabiano.

Some of the players who have moved on have blossomed elsewhere, others
have found it more difficult but, the fact of the matter is, all of
them were top players when they were at Sevilla.

Judging by the players coming through, the future looks bright, as the
Andalusian club continues to unearth formidable talent such as Diego
Perotti, Jose Carlos and Rodri.

The hope now is that Gregorio Manzano can use these resources, combined
with the current crop of stars, to construct a new team capable of
loosening – alongside the likes of Atletico Madrid, Valencia and
Villarreal – the stranglehold with which Barcelona and Real Madrid's
currently grip La Liga.

Aviva Premiership Preview: Saracens face Leicester test

Posted: 30 Sep 2010 02:57 PM PDT

Saracens will look to build on their victory over Northampton last week
when they host fellow title rivals Leicester at Vicarage Road on Sunday.
Saracens have lost five of their last six clashes with the Tigers,
including their defeat in last year's Premiership final. The Tigers
have lost in successive games away from Welford Road, but this fixture
tends to favour the away side, with the travelling outfit emerging
victorious on the last three occasions.

Northampton will be keen to get back to the top of the table after
having been knocked off by London Irish last week and will see a home
tie against Exeter as an ideal opportunity to bounce back.

The Devon side have turned a number of heads in recent weeks in beating
Newcastle and local rivals Gloucester at Sandy Park. However, they have
struggled away from home, suffering resounding defeats to both
Harlequins and defending champions Leicester.

London Wasps will also be looking to rebound from a disappointing
defeat as they travel to Edgeley Park to face Sale.

Wasps lost narrowly to Gloucester last week and will be keen to avenge
that defeat with a morale-boosting victory over struggling Sale.

London Irish also have an ideal fixture following their move to the top
of the table – they are pitted against bottom club Leeds Carnegie at
home.

Leeds did well to escape the drop last year and are seemingly faced
with the same battle this time around having not won a Premiership game
since 25 April.

London Irish will be keen to cement their place at the summit and will
have one eye on the bonus point.

Newcastle face a tough trip to the capital to play Harlequins at the
Twickenham Stoop. The Stoop has provided a tough place to visit for the
Falcons, with the north-east side not having won there in ten years.

Gloucester, fresh from their narrow victory over Wasps, will do well to
continue their winning form as, they travel to the Recreation Ground to
face a tough tie against Bath.

Bath are in impressive form too, having won six of their last seven
Premiership fixtures – and will be keen to continue that impressive run.

This weekend is the penultimate round of fixtures before the break for
European Cup fixtures, and all the teams involved will be looking to
capitalise on any momentum they can find heading into a cluttered
couple of months.

This weekend’s Aviva Premiership fixtures in full:
Bath v Gloucester
Sale v Wasps
Harlequins v Newcastle
London Irish v Leeds Carnegie
Northampton v Exeter
Saracens v Leicester

Defensive tactics pay off as Rangers overcome Bursaspor

Posted: 30 Sep 2010 02:44 PM PDT

Rangers set their sights on the knockout stages of the Champions League
after grinding out a 1-0 win against Turkish champions Bursaspor.
The Scottish champions had failed to win their previous six European
games at Ibrox, including their three Champions League games last
season, but were buoyed by a hard-fought 0-0 draw at Old Trafford two
weeks ago and recorded their first win at home since November 2007.

Make no mistake; Rangers will never be one of the most enjoyable of
teams to watch in the Champions League, nor will they be a free-scoring
side, but led by 40-year-old veteran David Weir, they are turning into
one of the most assured defensive units in the competition.

Before the game, the talk about Bursaspor goalkeeper Dimitar Ivankov
was that he takes the penalties for his side, but the Bulgarian had a
first half to forget in Glasgow as he flapped at two crosses before
being partly at fault for the only goal of the game.

Steven Whittaker's deep cross found the head of Kirk Broadfoot, despite
Ivankov favourite to win the ball, and the midfielder's header down
fell to Steven Naismith who prodded the ball home at the Ivankov's near
post.

Rangers continued to press the Bursaspor defence in the first half, and
controlled the game as the visitors struggled to get up and running –
their only real chance a 30-yard free-kick special from Brazilian-born
defender Gökçek Vederson which tested Allan McGregor.

Naismith had the chance to double his Champions League tally, but
screwed a volley wide ten minutes before the break.

Lone striker Kenny Miller came even closer to doubling Rangers’ lead
within a minute of the restart, but Ivankov did well to save with his
legs

Speaking after the game, Smith said: "It’s a great win because it’s a
difficult climate to operate in. There were a few disappointments last
season in home games so it’s nice to get a win.

"It was a terrific goal, a good header by Kirk Broadfoot and a good
finish by Steven. We had started well and possibly deserved to go into
the lead at that time so we were delighted."

"In other games here in the Champions League, we’ve played well and
haven’t managed to get in front. We’ve then lost a goal, had to go and
chase the game, and we’ve paid the penalty for it.

"But it was good to get in front today, it gave us something to hold on
to and we did that extremely well. These games are like cup ties –it’s
important to get the first goal."

Rangers' victory means they sit joint top of Group C with Manchester
United, who also won 1-0 with a late goal this week in Valencia.

When the draw was made United and Valencia had been labelled as
favourites to qualify, but the group has been blown wide open as Smith
now prepares for a visit from the Spanish league leaders in three
weeks' time.

"When Valencia come here it will be a big night for everyone," Smith
added. "From our point of view it gives us another opportunity–but we
appreciate they are an excellent side."

If Rangers can secure another draw against Los Che, Smith's tactics,
however dull, will have been fully justified as they edge closer to a
continued European campaign.

Ryder Cup 2010: Europe and USA ready to do battle

Posted: 30 Sep 2010 02:30 PM PDT

The world of golf has finally descended upon Wales and the Celtic Manor
Resort for the 2010 Ryder Cup.
The Americans are in town and are looking to defend their home victory
at Valhalla in 2008. The European team are the home favourites which is
not a surprise – rarely does the visiting side come and win on the
other's ground in these matches.

The European team, captained by Ryder Cup legend Colin Montgomerie, is
made up of Lee Westwood, Luke Donald, Ian Poulter, Miguel
Angel-Jimenez, Eduardo and Francesco Molinari, Rory McIlroy, Martin
Kaymer, Padraig Harrington, Ross Fisher, Peter Hanson and Graeme
McDowell.

The US squad, led by Corey Pavin, consists of Tiger Woods, Phil
Mickelson, Zach Johnson, Stewart Cink, Rickie Fowler, Dustin Johnson,
Hunter Mahan, Matt Kuchar, Steve Stricker, Jeff Overton, Bubba Watson
and Fed Ex Cup winner Jim Furyk.

Both teams are laced with inexperience. For the Americans, Dustin
Johnson, Matt Kuchar, Jeff Overton, Rickie Fowler and Bubba Watson are
all making their first Ryder Cup appearances. Only Tiger Woods, Phil
Mickelson, Jim Furyk and Stewart Cink could be called Ryder Cup
veterans.

And it’s a similar story on the European side. No experience with
Fisher, Hanson, Kaymer, both Molinari brothers and McIlroy, with
Westwood, Poulter, Donald, Jimenez and Harrington the veterans.

Most of the European players have had strong years. Kaymer is perhaps
the best on the European Tour, and Westwood on the PGA.

Westwood reinjured a calf late in the summer that slowed down a very
strong year, perhaps his best ever, but he is said to be fit and ready
for the main event.

On the American side Kuchar has enjoyed what was arguably the best year
on the PGA Tour, and Furyk arrives on the back of his Tour Championship
win and the Fed Ex Cup title.

Mickelson and Woods struggled for most of the year, although the former
did win the first major of the season in the Masters back in April.
Both of them, however, have played better of late.

Team play makes up the schedule on Friday and Saturday, with foursome
and fourball play both days. The singles matches finish up the Ryder
Cup on Sunday. The Americans need 14 of the possible 28 points in order
to hold on to the cup. And Europe need 14-and-a-half points to steal it
back.

Celtic Manor's 2010 Course, as it is called, should slightly favour the
Europeans. The greens will be a tad slower than the American's are
generally used to, and the fairways tight and the rough long. The
American side tends to have longer hitters, but they are less accurate.

There is water in play on about half of the holes. The front nine is
predominantly a links style course, while the back nine is a more
American-type water hazard layout.

Ancelotti to attend Arsenal clash despite father’s death

Posted: 30 Sep 2010 02:22 PM PDT

Carlo Ancelotti will return to London in time to take charge of
Chelsea’s clash with Arsenal on Sunday despite the death of his father
Giuseppe.
Giuseppe, 87, died on Wednesday night with his son at his side and the
funeral will take place on Saturday.

Assistant manager Ray Wilkins will take charge of first team matters in
Ancelotti’s absence, including Friday’s press conference.

Chelsea returned to winning ways after two straight defeats with a
confident 2-0 victory over French champions Marseille on Tuesday
evening.

A Chelsea statement read: “Carlo Ancelotti’s father Giuseppe passed
away in Italy last night aged 87 with his son at his side.

“Everyone at Chelsea Football Club sends our deepest condolences to
Carlo and his family. They are all in our thoughts at this time.

“The funeral will take place in Italy on Saturday. Carlo will return to
London for Sunday’s match versus Arsenal.”

Ancelotti boasts a perfect record against Arsenal with Chelsea. The
Italian manager oversaw a 3-0 victory at Emirates Stadium in November
2009 and a 2-0 win at Stamford Bridge earlier this year.

Hernández can be an Old Trafford great – Fletcher

Posted: 30 Sep 2010 01:51 PM PDT

Darren Fletcher believes Mexican forward Javier Hernández will develop
into an Old Trafford great following a promising start to his
Manchester United career.
The Scotland international sung the striker’s praises after United’s
crucial 1-0 Champions League victory over Valencia at the intimidating
Mestalla Stadium.

Hernández scored an 85th-minute winner to move the English side to the
summit of Group C, level on points with Scottish champions Rangers.

“Javier got his head down and finished it fantastically,” said the
Scotland captain. “He showed he is going to be a great player for
Manchester United.

“He is young and still getting used to the way we play. But he has come
in from Mexico and is a real talent.”

Sir Alex Ferguson signed the 22-year-old Hernández for £7.4million
after he impressed for Mexico during this summer’s World Cup in South
Africa.

Hernández, who had only made one start for United since scoring in the
Charity Shield against Chelsea in August, remained level-headed despite
his obvious elation at his first Champions League goal.

“It is a dream come true for me but the result is the biggest thing for
me,” said Hernández.

“I’m so happy about the goal and it will give me so much confidence. I
am only at the start of my career with United and to score so early in
the Champions League is a big boost for me.”
