Arsène Wenger thrilled with Arsenal’s ‘outstanding’ football

Posted: 22 Jan 2011 12:37 PM PST

BARCLAYS PREMIER LEAGUE, 22 JANUARY 2011 Arsenal 3 Wigan Athletic 0
Arsène Wenger hailed his side’s “outstanding” football after Robin van
Persie’s first hat-trick for Arsenal helped the gunners cruise to
victory over Wigan.
Van Persie opened the scoring after 21 minutes when he smashed his
effort past Ali Al Habsi after being fed by Alex Song. The in-form
Dutchman added a second just before the hour with a brilliant
first-time finish after being found by Cesc Fàbregas’ searching pass.

Gunners striker van Persie then blasted a second-half penalty over the
bar after Gary Caldwell had been sent off for pulling back Fàbregas,
but he duly completed his hat-trick when he fired in from close range
after Theo Walcott did well to hold up the ball.

Wenger, whose side have taken 14 points from the last 18, was delighted
with his side’s display despite the hosts being unable to convert a
number of first-half opportunities.

“The players were a bit frustrated because we did not take our chances
but I felt in the first half we played outstanding football,” Wenger
said. “We feel stronger and stronger in every single game.

“It is interesting the chance we have in front of us because we have an
interesting game, the way we play is for me fantastic to watch. Let’s
just keep going.”

And the Arsenal manager was full of praise for van Persie, who has now
scored six in his last three outings. “He is back in form,” said Wenger
of van Persie. “He was already fit and sharp last week and overall we
had a good team performance so he could finish a hat-trick.”

Wenger also admits he has “no choice” but to rotate his team for the
second leg of the gunners’ League Cup semi-final clash with Ipswich at
Emirates Stadium on Tuesday.

“We will rotate, we have no choice,” added the Arsenal boss. “We play
nine games in January, it’s the most we have ever played.

“When you look at the fixtures we had in December it means we need to
rotate from game to game. But we have fantastic players on the bench
and it is very important because we cannot always play with the same
eleven.”

Australian Open 2011: Andy Murray through to round four

Posted: 22 Jan 2011 11:12 AM PST

British No1 Andy Murray strolled into round four of the Australian Open
after demolishing the 32nd seed Guillermo García-López in straight sets.
The world No5′s variety, athleticism and power proved simply too much
for the Spaniard as Murray sealed a convincing 6-1, 6-2, 6-2 victory.
“It was a very good match,” Murray said. “He’s a tough player but I
played well. I didn’t give him many chances on my serve so I’m happy.

“My intensity has been good so when I play the tougher matches I think
I’ll be ok. If I can keep up my intensity I’ll have a good chance.”

Murray added: “I have played very well in every match. It is difficult
to concentrate for long periods in this heat. I’ve won my matches in
straight sets but it’s definitely a lot harder than the scoreline
suggests.”

In the second point of the match García-López stunned the crowd with
a 'hot-dog' shot before racing to 40-0 up, but Murray hit back to break
in the first game and crushed his opponent in under an hour-and-a-half.

Murray has been working on his serve during the brief off-season and is
clearly benefiting from his endeavour, keeping his first serve above 60
per cent throughout the match to restrict García-López to few
opportunities.

Murray's victory sets up an intriguing last-16 tie against the ever
improving Jurgen Melzer after the Austrian defeated Marcos Baghdatis
6-7, 6-2, 6-1, 4-3 when the Cypriot had to retire with a hand injury.

World No1 Rafael Nadal joins Murray in round four after he was made to
fight against teenager Bernard Tomic before prevailing after a
second-set scare 6-2, 7-5, 6-3.

The 18-year-old Australian played with no fear and attempted to dictate
the rallies. He raced into a 4-0 lead in the second set, but Nadal dug
deep and responded with some superb counter play.

Nadal was clearly impressed by his opponent. He said of Tomic: “He is
improving every year, and he has every chance of being in the top
positions very soon. I'm sure he is going to be a big rival.”

He added: “I have to player better if I want to get into the
qarter-finals, I have to be more aggressive and hit the lines more. At
the moment I'm hitting too straight.”

Elsewhere, Robin Soderling continued to punish opponents as he swept
aside Jan Hernych 6-3, 6-1, 6-4, whilst firing down 33 aces.

And Canadian Milos Raonic produced the upset of the day. The
20-year-old, who has a career-high ranking of 152, defeated Mikael
Youzhny 6-4 7-5 4-6 6-4 and will now play seventh seed David Ferrer.

Marin Cilic eventually prevailed over Wimbledon marathon man John Isner
4-6, 6-2, 6-7, 7-6, 9-7, and 2008 runner-up Jo Wilfried Tsonga crashed
out against the unseeded Alexandr Dolgopolov 3-6, 6-3, 3-6, 6-1, 6-1.

Dimitar Berbatov treble helps keep Man Utd in pole position

Posted: 22 Jan 2011 10:56 AM PST
BARCLAYS PREMIER LEAGUE, 22 JANUARY 2011 Manchester United 5 Birmingham
City 0 Dimitar Berbatov’s third hat-trick of the season helped
Manchester United demolish tame Birmingham City at Old Trafford.
The Bulgarian forward put the hosts ahead after just two minutes before
doubling his side’s lead on the half-hour mark. Ryan Giggs then added a
third on the stroke of half-time before Berbatov completed his
hat-trick. Nani was then left to round off proceedings, scoring his
seventh goal of the season 15 minutes from time.

Blues boss Alex McLeish opted for a defensive formation and appeared
content to try and contain the league leaders with one eye on his
side’s midweek League Cup semi-final second-leg against West Ham.

But United took the lead within just two minutes. John O’Shea
capitalised upon careless marking as he escaped to the front post and
deflected Giggs’ corner into the path of Berbatov, who simply nodded
into an empty net to give home side the perfect start and instantly
force McLeish to re-evaluate his tactics.

United were comfortable in possession throughout, with Anderson,
Michael Carrick, Giggs and Nani exchanging passes in midfield with
moderate ease.

The visitors were limited to audacious attempts on goal from outside
United’s penalty area. Birmingham’s lone striker, Matt Derbyshire, was
given little support from his team-mates and any threat posed was
easily tempered by Nemanja Vidic and Chris Smalling.

United doubled their lead after the visitors surrendered possession in
midfield. Wayne Rooney drove forward and unselfishly teed-up his strike
partner Berbatov – the Bulgarian firing a rasping right-footed effort
past three lunging defenders and Ben Foster in goal.

And deep into first-half added time the home side ended the game as a
contest. Delightful interplay between Rooney and Berbatov created space
for the England international on the right wing. Rooney then delivered
a low cross which was met by unmarked Giggs at the far post, and the
Welsh international duly fired home his 158th goal for the Red Devils.

Birmingham immediately threw on Cameron Jerome, providing Derbyshire
with some much-needed assistance in attack after Smalling and Vidic’s
trouble-free first half.

But the early change had little effect on the momentum of the match as
Rooney nodded wide of the inside post after good work by Nani on the
right.

Berbatov’s third of the afternoon was unglamorous but effective. Edwin
Van der Sar’s clearance was collected by Rooney who found Giggs in the
penalty area, with Bebatov simply poking home the 37-year-old’s cross.

United continued to press with Berbatov coming close to adding to his
three-goal haul as he glanced a shot past Foster’s goal before Nani got
the fifth as he angled a low drive into the right corner of the
Birmingham net.

Manager Sir Alex Ferguson was full of praise for Berbatov after the
final whistle. “It was a marvellous performance from Dimitar,” said
Ferguson. “He could have scored more. We were a bit wasteful with our
finishing at times but you can’t complain at the performance.”

And Ferguson hailed an important win in their chase for a 19th league
title. He added: “It certainly helps the goal difference, there is no
question about that.

“We have some tough games ahead but hopefully the players can grasp the
nettle. We have some experience. We have the squad. Hopefully we can
manage all the games we have ahead.”

José Mourinho refuses to commit future to Real Madrid

Posted: 22 Jan 2011 04:45 AM PST

José Mourinho has offered no guarantees that he will remain as Real
Madrid coach next season amid reports a rift with the club’s director
general Jorge Valdano.
The Portuguese manager, who only took over at the Bernabéu in the
summer, says he will wait until the end of this campaign before making
a decision over his future.

“The world is full of rumours, but they’re not all true,” said Mourinho
on Thursday. “Regarding my future, we’ll see what happens at the end of
the season. Contracts aren’t the most important thing in football. If
all the parties are happy at the end of a campaign, they remain
together. If they aren’t, they don’t.”

Earlier, Valdano had played down the rumours of a disagreement. He
said: “There are no problems between Mourinho and I. He is our coach,
the man who must lead us to triumph, and the team is proving to be very
competitive under him.

“It’s all about being better each season and we are better now than we
were in the previous campaign. We expect to keep this up.”

Mourinho has been looking to sign an additional striker in January to
replace Gonzalo Higuaín after the Argentine was ruled out for most of
the season with a back injury that required surgery.

However, the Madrid club are yet to enter the January transfer market
despite being linked with winter swoops for both Ruud van Nistelrooy
and Carlos Tévez.

Mourinho’s side, who host Real Mallorca at the Bernabéu on Sunday,
currently lie four points behind leaders Barcelona in the La Liga table.
