- Sepp Blatter ‘to step down as Fifa president in four years’ - Inter Milan chief Moratti hails three-way Serie A title race - England captain John Terry insists he has players’ backing - Karun Chandhok confirmed as Team Lotus reserve driver Sepp Blatter ‘to step down as Fifa president in four years’ Posted: 22 Mar 2011 04:43 PM PDT Sepp Blatter has announced he will step down as Fifa president in four years’ time if he is re-elected in June. Blatter, 75, is seeking a fourth term in charge of the governing body and is being challenged by Qatar’s Mohamed bin Hammam in this summer’s election. “You know very well that I am a candidate for the next four years as Fifa president but these will be the last four years for which I stand as a candidate,” said Blatter at the Uefa Congress in Paris on Tuesday. It has been suggested that Blatter chose to reveal the news in Paris in an attempt to win the support of Uefa president Michel Platini, who this week refused to rule out the prospect of running for the Fifa presidency in four years’ time. “Let’s meet again in three years and then I will tell you,” Platini said. Asian confederation chief Bin Hammam is expected to seek an eight-year reign as president and it has been claimed Platini could support Blatter so he could stand for election himself in 2015. Uefa holds a strong hand in the Fifa election, with European executives making up a large percentage of the vote. But Platini, who was re-elected as Uefa president unopposed this week, insists he has not yet decided whose side he will take in June. The former France captain said: “There are two candidates. I’m going to think about it, consult with my vice-presidents and the executive committee and see what position we will adopt. I can’t think about myself any more.” “To have two candidates is good for democracy, good for ideas, for change, for everything. It’s good for Fifa.” Blatter’s opponent Bin Hammam says he wants to make Fifa more transparent, starting by making the bidding process for future World Cups more open. “It’s reasonable and logical to vote openly. It happens in other organisations, why shouldn’t it happen in Fifa?” Bin Hammam told the BBC. He added: “I think I can rehabilitate Fifa’s reputation. This is my vision and this is my goal. If I fail, then I fail. I’m looking for the support of everybody.” Fifa has set a deadline of 1 April for other candidates to be nominated for June’s election. Inter moved to within two points of leaders AC Milan following an enthralling weekend of top flight action in Italy, and Moratti said: “This year it’s a great championship and great fun because there are three teams in the running. “Milan looked like they had opened up a gap but now Napoli are very close too.” Defending champions Inter overcame relegation-threatened Lecce 1-0 at San Siro on Sunday after Palermo had dented Milan's title hopes with their 1-0 triumph over the leaders the day before – a defeat which also edged Napoli and Udinese back into contention. Lifting their sixth consecutive Serie A trophy would add gloss to a turbulent season for Inter after any remnants of the elation that came with last season's treble were swiftly washed away by Rafael Benítez's turbulent spell in charge. The defending champions trailed Massimo Allegri's Milan by 13 points at the turn of the year, albeit with two games in hand, when former Milan boss Leonardo was unveiled as the Spaniard’s successor. The Brazilian's appointment has proved a master-stroke by Moratti, with Inter storming to 12 victories in 15 games to leave Leonardo's side just two points off the pace with eight games to play. The signing of striker Giampaolo Pazzini from Sampdoria has injected life into an ageing squad and has added an extra dimension to Leonardo's attacking options. Pazzini, 26, has already netted six goals in 10 games since swapping Genoa for Milan. Inter and AC next face each other in the Milan derby after the international break, and despite the narrow gap between the two teams Leonardo does not believe the outcome will decide the destination of this year’s title. “All the remaining matches are decisive, not just that one,” Leonardo said. “The derby won’t be crucial because after that there are another seven rounds.” “What we wanted to do was get closer, get back in the race and challenge for the Scudetto. We reach this derby in the best possible condition.” Serie A table snapshot England captain John Terry insists he has players’ backing Posted: 22 Mar 2011 09:18 AM PDT John Terry admits he may not have the backing of all England supporters following his reinstatement as captain – but insists he has the full support of his team-mates. Terry was reappointed the permanent England skipper by manager Fabio Capello last weekend just over a year after the Italian stripped the 30-year-old of the armband amid allegations over his private life. Capello has faced criticism over his decision to drop Rio Ferdinand from the role but Terry says the England players have accepted the Italian's choice. “I’m not going to be everybody’s cup of tea, but it is the decision the manager has taken,” Terry said. “When the manager confronted the team on the training pitch, he asked the players if they had any questions and nobody spoke. "Nobody said a world to the manager, nobody said a word to me. Respect for the players around me and the manager has always been there." Terry added: “I think as a group of players we’re coming here looking forward to playing for our country and looking forward to putting on the shirt.” The Chelsea captain also revealed that he has spoken to Ferdinand since his reinstatement. He continued: "Rio called me which was a very nice touch and goes to show what a great man Rio is. “We had a 10-minute conversation and he wished me well. He He cares about England and said the most important thing was to keep winning. “He was naturally disappointed, but said the most important thing was to keep winning.” Karun Chandhok confirmed as Team Lotus reserve driver Posted: 22 Mar 2011 04:06 AM PDT Karun Chandhok has been confirmed as Team Lotus' reserve driver for the 2011 Formula 1 season. The 27-year-old joins the team after an evaluation period in pre-season testing, with his deal set to see him play an integral role with the team "for 2011 and beyond". The Indian joins race drivers Heikki Kovalainen and Jarno Trulli, third driver Luiz Razia and test drivers Davide Valsecchi and Ricardo Teixeira at the team. The former Hispania driver, who was dropped by the Spanish team mid-way through 2010, will be thrown straight into action with a run in the T128 during Friday practice for this weekend's season-opening Australian Grand Prix in Melbourne. A Lotus statement read: "Karun is one of the most exciting and popular drivers in global motorsport and has enjoyed a stellar career in his rise up through the ranks to Formula 1. "His technical input and obvious talent will provide the team with more valuable insights into how to optimise the T128's performance potential on-track, alongside his ambassadorial role for the team as one of its official drivers." Lotus team principal Tony Fernandes added: "This is another great day for Team Lotus. Karun’s appointment to our team gives us not only his immense driving talent and F1 experience, both of which will help us develop the car even further, but also brings one of the warmest, most professional personalities I have the pleasure of knowing into the Team Lotus family. "I do not think it is going too far to say that Karun represents the future of motor racing. He is living proof that geography is no boundary to talent and ambition and that you will succeed if you work hard and keep dreaming. "He is fiercely proud of his Indian heritage but he has a truly global outlook and I am honoured that Team Lotus is now giving one of India's brightest stars the chance to continue to develop his talent. “Everyone in the team is excited about working with Karun, and I cannot wait to see him representing the Indian nation in our car." Chandhok said: "I've been talking to the team for quite a while about a role with them and I'm delighted we're now able to confirm that I will be driving for Team Lotus in 2011. "The details of exactly which sessions I will be in the car for are being worked out now and after having spent some time with them at the recent pre-season tests I can see exactly how passionate everyone in Team Lotus is about taking this team back to the top of the F1 grid. "These are very exciting times for Team Lotus and it's a real honour to be able to play a part in helping shape this team's future. I want to thank Tony, Din, Nasa, Riad and Mike for having the faith in me to give me a chance to help the team develop and I'll do my best to repay that faith wherever I can."
