David Beckham arrived at the royal wedding wearing his OBE medal on
the wrong side of his jacket.

Beckham and his wife Victoria were among the early guests to arrive
for the marriage of Prince William and Kate Middleton at Westminster
Abbey.

And the former England captain was seen to be wearing his medal on his
right-hand side, when it should be worn on the left.

It isn't clear exactly why ancient custom dictates that such medals
are worn on the left, but some believe it is because they will be over
or close to the heart.

Beckham received the OBE, or Officer of The Order of The British
Empire, in 2003 for services to football. The medal carries the words
"For Meritorious Service" at the bottom.

Beckham's football career has often seemed more like a fairytale. He
first made his name at Manchester United, where he helped the club to
a host of trophies, including their unforgettable Treble in 1999. He
later moved to Real Madrid, where he played for four years, and now
plays for Los Angeles Galaxy.

Beckham has also made 109 appearances for England, and scored goals in
three separate World Cup finals.

He also played a key role as an ambassador when London was awarded the
2012 Olympic Games back in 2005, and played a similar role but with
less success when England lost out to Russia in the race to host the
2018 World Cup.

It was during that campaign that he became close to Prince William,
who was performing a similar role.
