As an additional data point, my external screen is rotated by 90° and
has a higher resolution than the laptop’s screen.

I actually run the following sequence of commands *after* the WM has
started, which perhaps confuses it?

xrandr --output "$out" --mode 1920x1200
xrandr --output "$out" --rotate left
xrandr --output "$out" --above LVDS1
