Hey Guix,
The release team is gearing up for the Guix 1.6.0 release, following the
release process as defined in GCD 005[1]. This is the four-week
heads-up for all teams and interested parties:
The toolchain and transition freeze starts on Monday, 2 November 2026.
>From that moment on, master ideally no longer accepts:
• changes to toolchains such as gcc-toolchain or rust, or runtimes like Java.
• changes that cause large transitions.
• changes that impact a large number of packages.
• changes to the daemon.
• changes to packages and services in the 'minimal' package set as found
at
<https://codeberg.org/guix/guix/src/branch/master/etc/manifests/release-minimal.scm>
[2].
A few requests for the teams:
• Decide which version of the software you work on you would like to see
in 1.6.0, and plan accordingly.
• If you have large transitions or major updates planned, please get
them merged before 2 November. Keep in mind that team branches take
time to pass through CI/QA/Review.
• Ideally no new grafts after the freeze. If a fix can be made without
a graft, please consider that. Each graft increases what users have to
download and store. Security fixes naturally remain welcome on
master. Please proactively reach out if a graft is required so we can
take it into account.
If anything in your plans conflicts with this, please reply here or
contact the release team.
Your friendly neighbourhood release team, Tanguy, Dan, Rutherther, Noé
and Jelle
