WILDGOA ALERT: STOP THE FROG CATCHERS! SAVE THE FROGS!

Dear WildGoans,
The pre-monsoons (or monsoons) have already hit us
here in Goa, and
along with that, we have the joy of hearing the frogs
coming out.
I'm sure all of you have seen flashlights in the
fields, which means
that there are people catching frogs that have come
out of
hibernation, in the hope of mating. Instead, the poor
frogs are
caught, slaughtered for an illegal delicacy, cooked at
home or at
many famous restaurants under the name 'Jumping
Chicken'.
Frogs play a very important role in the control of
insects,
especially mosquitoes, which spread malaria and other
crop damaging
insects. Their croaking in the monsoon nights can act
as a lullaby to
put you to sleep, reminding you that you are at home,
in Goa and all
is well. Catching of frogs just before they mate will
not only
destroy that frog, but an entire generation of unborn
tadpoles.
It's
sad that people look out for the biggest of the frogs,
which are the
ones which are most likely to spawn the most number of
eggs.
I appeal to every WildGoan, and for that matter, every
Goan as well,
to try and do your best to stop the Frog Catching from
repeating this
year.
Here's what you can do.
Don't join friends that invite you to catch some
frogs. Instead,
educate them about their illegal activity and its
risks.
If you see somebody going out into the fields, call
out to him and
tell him not to. Explain to him how important it is to
save the life
of the frogs.
Tell them that it's illegal to do so. You can also
quote the legal
Acts:
Prevention of Cruelty to Animals Act, 1960
Under Section 11
3. Carrying or transporting animals in such a manner
that is causes
suffering.
6. Mutilating an animal: Cutting off ears, or tails,
breaking of legs
of an animal.
Penalty: These offences are punishable with a fine
that may extend
upto one hundered rupees or with imprisonment for a
term which may
extend to three months or with both.
Wildlife Protection Act, 1972
Under Sections 9, 39, 40 (2)
11. Hunting, keeping or breeding of any wild animals
or birds.
13. Selling skins or meat of wild animals.
Penalty: The offender shall be punishable with the
imprisonment term
of not less that one year which may extend to six
years and also with
a fine which shall not be less than five thousand
rupees.
Don't be rude or get violent. If the person chooses to
ignore you,
shout out that you will report him to the police. This
should scare
him.
If they still do ignore you, call your local police
station or dial
100 immediately and report the offence, stating the
time and
location. You could also mention the offender's
vehicle registration
number plate to see that justice is served for our
little creatures
singing away in the fields.
