Natak translation � I
Prince Jacob and his troupe deserves to be congratulated for his recent production �Rupnnem�. The packed auditorium at Kala Academy (including my family and I) enjoyed the show tremendously. This was evident from the applause the play received time and again, from the beginning to the end.
It is a fact that the Konkani tiatr and �khell tiatr� are unique forms of �theatre�. There have been many voices raised about the standard of tiatr and �khell tiatr� in recent years. Many feel that the standard is on a downslide, some differ, but till date the �tiatr� has never seen a dwindling audience. There are some who feel that the original form of tiatr, that is, with seven �podde� and the �canto�, �clown�, �duet�, �duo�, �trio�, �quartet�, and not forgetting the unique �tiatr� band ensemble, etc, which forms the part of the traditional �tiatr� have to be preserved. It is
absolutely true, but besides the �tiatr� it is high time the Konkani �theatre� as such has to be developed side by side. And what Prince Jacob has done in �Rupnnem� is exactly in this direction.
In a brief address before the commencement of the play Prince Jacob made it clear to the audience that they should see this production not as his regular �khell tiatr�, but something different, thus exposing the audience to the vast spectrum of the �art of theatre�. Nevertheless, he tried to keep the flavour of �tiatr� by including the �canto�, �duo�, �trio� and the �kantars� which are part of �tiatr�. That he has adapted a Marathi drama or any other drama in any other language is immaterial. Credit must be given to the effort Prince Jacob and his troupe has taken.
My guess is, that after seeing the original play Sahi re Sahi, Prince Jacob must have taken it as a challenge to do it in Konkani. I call it a challenge because the role (or roles) Prince Jacob played in the drama is quite
challenging. In fact the entire play is quite a challenge to any theatre personality. I can say this because I have been involved in theatre for many years, I have been a keen follower of �tiatr�, I have been a part of theatre groups, and have written and directed a few plays and �tiatro�, not at the professional level though. I have also seen a variety of English, Marathi and Hindi theatre.
Konkani tiatr and �khell tiatr� have to grow and flourish, but at the same time I feel that the �tiatr� audience has to be exposed to permutations, thus paving the way to Konkani �theatre�.
Prince Jacob deserves a pat on his back for the four different roles he played in the production. There were times when he had to switch over from: one role to another in such quick succession, that it left the audience spellbound. These four characters he played simultaneously were poles apart in their respective personalities. He did it with near perfection. It is a feat serious theatre personalities
would like to perform to prove their caliber. The entire cast did extremely well too. It was a joy to watch this near flawless production.In future I hope more tiatrists would take up similar challenges and develop a parallel Konkani �theatre� while keeping the tiatr and khell tiatr alive and kicking.

A few days back Prince Jacob and Tomazinho Cardoz jointly called a press conference to release the formers new show which is a translation of Marathi natak Sahi re Sahi.At the press conference Mr Cardozo proudly said that it is he who motivated Mr Jacob to translate the said natak for the benefit of the tiatr fans and secondly it would bring the Catholic and Hindus together otherwise according to Mr Cardoz, it is only the Catholic community that watch tiatrs.
It is surprising that Mr Cardoz has no Knowledge of the shows performed every year by Mr Jacob and other tiatrists during Diwali and Ganesh festival for the benefit of Hindu brethren and the audience at these shows are more than that for nataks so how can one say that only Catholics watch tiatrs, by making such irresponsible statements, it gives a feeling that the people of Goa are divided on communal lines.
I fail to understand Mr Cardozo logic. Once upon a time the said Cardoz was out to give sermons that tiatr writers should publish their tiatrs in the form of books so that others would be able to translate them. If Mr Cardozo was genuinely interested in the welfare of tiatrs then he would have prevailed upon Jacob to publish his 36 tiatrs in the form of books.
If writers of high caliber are told to translate nataks then how will they grind their brains to produce their own tiatrs of excellence and promote the Konkani stage. If every one starts translating nataks then in future there will be no tiatr writers only translators, of course this is a new turn but turn towards a downfall of Konkan
