Stand up and be counted !

THIS is in reply to the letter 'Save our club' (GDN August 16), with reference to the Young Goans Club.

"When I first read Mr YGC member's letter, I was overjoyed to know that there was a secret dedicated member of the organisation.

Unfortunately, l don't have enough of dedicated, experienced and cultured members like Mr YGCM.

If I did, we could have performed miracles for the club, with the guidance from such members, and with the enthusiasm, spirit and manpower we possess within the club.

I would also like to take this opportunity to help enlighten my deluded friend Mr YGCM.

First of all, it is very easy for anyone to criticise someone's efforts, secondly, it is even easier to remain anonymous while criticising. I consider this the act of a coward and not of a serious member, who wishes to make a difference.

I seriously wish to inform all members who have a doubt in their mind, that I was forced to take up the reins as president because none of the belligerent members like Mr YGCM had taken the trouble to file a single nomination for the election.

Even after I took up the reins, we were successful with our transition to our new premises. It wasn't the best of places but knowing our budget, without the income generated from the bar, our choices were limited.

About other activities which can help generate income, Mr YGCM should understand that the cricket tournament was not an exclusive fund-raising activity, but was a part of the Young Goans Club tradition.

As Mr YGCM himself said, Goans are very sports-loving and talented people and the cricket tournament has been going on for many years.

It was not only the cricket tournament that upset the residents.

We even had a lot of interference when we conducted the Christmas Tree celebrations, which was done during the daytime and indoors. It was not our activities that the residents despised, but simply the concept of having a club within their area.

Coming to the point of other fund-raisers - when the club organised a fund-raiser event, ie the May Queen contest, in a way that satisfied all the legal obligations of this country, the only support we received from members like Mr YGCM was phone calls requesting for free tickets.

Now how can one organise a fund-raiser where it gives away free tickets?

I wish to conclude by saying that it is very easy to sit in the comfort of one's home, or another club's premises and criticise someone else's efforts.

Here is your opportunity to make a difference. I request you, or rather I dare you, to take the reins from my hand and carry out the club activities in the non-messy, non-belligerent and prudent way you are dreaming of. But be sure of yourself, as the local authorities are well informed of the individuals who were involved in bringing the downfall of this club.
