CHILDREN in Bahrain are being offered the chance to become TV quiz stars. Schools are being urged to enter the Indian Club Inter-School Quiz Contest, which could lead to a place in an international TV final. Preliminary rounds are being held at the Indian Club from 5pm on September 29. The actual contest will be held at the club from 8pm on September 30. The event, held in Bahrain for the first time, will feature TV quizmaster Derek O'Brien. Entry to the contest is free and all schools in Bahrain are encouraged to send in as many teams as they want. Each team must consist of two students, one seventh grader (not more than 13 years old) and one eighth grader (not more than 14 years old), who will be asked questions by the quiz master on any topic. Entry deadline is September 22. Certificates signed by Mr O'Brien will be presented to all the participants. Winners of the Bahrain contest will also receive a trophy, a cash award and gifts. The winning team will represent their school and Bahrain on Sony's TV Bournvita Quiz Contest, to be held the first half of next year in India or Singapore. The team, along with one teacher will be flown out courtesy of Gulf Air. If the contest is in India, their stay will be sponsored by KQScore Company, Mumbai. Before becoming a professional quizmaster Mr O'Brien experimented with journalism and then moved over to advertising with Ogilvy and Mather (O&M) in India. "My father was into quizzing and as a child I had watched him quite often. That left an impression," said Mr O'Brien. That was about the time that the quizzing bug bit him, but it was not until 1988 that he actually took up professional quizzing. In 1992, he eventually quit his job to became a professional quizmaster. It was a risky decision, but Mr O'Brien was quite prepared to take it, given that by that time quizzing had become a passion. He formed his own company called Big Ideas, which is now known as KQScore Company. It was with Bournvita Quiz Contest, on Zee TV that Mr O'Brien became a household name. Besides conducting quizzes on television, Mr O'Brien also writes regular columns in eight newspapers in India where he provides enough matter for children and adults alike to constructively channel their energy and tickle the brain. Mr O'Brien has managed to maintain freshness and interest by keeping the format simple and varying the difficult level of the questions. Alba is the presenter of the show and co-sponsors for the event are Intercol and Energade. Gulf Air is the official carrier, GDN is the official Press and the official printer is Najah Printing Press. For further details contact the quiz organiser Santosh Karkera on 39087860 or 17270196. |
