For US India is as important as Indiana
TIMES NEWS NETWORK
DELHI/MUMBAI/KOLKATA:
Delhi, West Bengal or Maharashtra could well be the
swing states in this year's US elections. Sounds
absurd? Not if you consider the expected close finish.
Every vote will count and there are 60,000 votes in
India.
"Given the huge level of interest this time, apathy
will not be a factor," said a US embassy official.
There are four categories of voters here: US military
personnel, government employees, businessmen and
students. You could add another - NRIs who've taken
American citizenship and are here for some reason.
According to embassy sources, military personnel and
businessmen tend to vote Republican.
Students are usually Democrats and government
employees, too, lean that way. But given the
casualties in Iraq, no one seems sure about the
military personnel this time.
For NRIs, the flavour is usually Republican.
Amrit Das, CEO of Nasdaq-listed Netguru, said that he
had already cast an "absentee ballot". Das, who has
been a US citizen since 1980, has voted in every
presidential election since he became eligible to
exercise his franchise.
"I made it a point to vote since we should all have a
say in the kind of policies we want pursued by the
US," said California-based Das.
IT entrepreneur Santanu Bhattacharjee, who is
currently based in Kolkata, however, said that
business preoccupations had prevented him from voting
in the present elections.
Bhattacharjee, whose home is in Texas, had voted the
regular way in November 2000.
