Post lunch session today at around 1330 hrs (IST) or thereafter on 6/11/2004 Saturday evening a fire broke out at the newly constructed Osia Multiplex Fatorda twin cinema theatre located on the 3rd and 4th floor built at a cost of Rs. 3 crores
The two theatres named "Hollywood" with 124 seats and Bollywood with 211 seats were scheduled to be inaugurated on 12th November,2004 The theatre has a Christie P 35 GPDZ AT projector head with combined digital/analog reverse scan and motorised turrel with aperture change and control Xenon Lamp Technology Screen 1 23 ft X 13 ft screen 2 21 ft x 12 ft Audio System 5.1.DTS Digital Dolby the state of art technology. According to an official from the Margao Fire Service station that this writer spoke to ---confirmed that the fire broke before 1500 hrs IST and the security personnel at the site attempted unsuccessfully to put off the fire. It was only later that they called up the Margao town Fire & Emergency services . The three fire tenders rushed to the site while a huge crowd witnessed the dark smoke clouds emerging and pungent aroma all around . The outside of the Multiplex does not reveal much signs of fire as the flames were confined to the interiors. It is believed that all the seats have perished in the fire and the estimated loss is worked out at Rs.70 lacs. However niether the owners were avaiable at the site nor the nearly five security agencies personnel could ascertain the cause of fire. What raises questions in the minds of several of the shop owners around the complex that this writer contacted is that ---why only after trying to put the fire off themselves did they called in the fire tender? True most of the personnel are non-goans but even otherwise it should not be difficult to call a fire tender they argued. At the time this writer inspected the site which was declared out of bounds for the onlookers the Police team headed by PI Shirwaiker were seen completing the inspection. Most of the premises in this Multiplex are unoccupied except for a prominent cold storage shop down below on the side of the South Goa Planning Development Authority (now designated as Margao Planning and Development Authority after its bifurcation )Fish Market at Old market Fatorda near KTCL Bus terminus. With the Goa -- International Film Festival of India underway from 29th November,2004 to 9th December, 2004 these theatres were also planned to be put into use. The Hindi film "Veer Zara" starring Shahrukh Khan Preity Zinta were scheduled for screening on the 12 Nov 2004 This writer tried to contact Mr Adnan Rasiwalla the architect of this multiplex but was not available for comment. Besides Cine Vishant at Aquem Margao which is still screening movies the others viz; Blue Pearl at Pajifond Behind Our Lady of Grace Church Margao has recently closed and Cine Metropole near Clube Harmonia Margao have closed down permanently for new premises in its place ---while Cine Lata is being shut down recently for rennovation works after the Goa Government had promised funds to the Zantye's. It is not known whether the restoration of the Multiplex theatres will be carried out but given the damage restricted mainly to the seats there is scope for opening these twin theatres immediately. >From the OSIA MULTIPLEX - Margao GODFREY J I GONSALVES Borda Margao Goa gonsalvesgodfreyji.yahoo.co.in ________________________________________________________________________ Yahoo!
