Teen dies in race tragedy

KUWAIT CITY: "She was a brilliant, beautiful and down-to-earth girl."
That's how her classmates remember Afifa Rashed Mirza, 14, who passed
away on Monday at school reportedly of a cardiac arrest. Like any
other day Afifa - a class ten student from Indian Community School,
Salmiya - woke up in the morning, had her breakfast and left for
school a little early to take part in the inter-house school sports
meet. "I never thought that her end was so near. She was all excited
and was God-willing very confident, she would win the race," says her
friend who was with her when Afifa breathed her last. Afifa's friend
told the Arab Times that Afifa came second in the 100 meters race and
that when she crossed the finishing line, she collapsed.

Her classmates and teachers thought that she was tired. "She then
began trembling, we then rushed to her and one of the girls took her
in her arms before wrapping her with warm clothing. "We tried to
revive her by rubbing her hands. She opened her mouth thrice. A nurse
who was around also tried to revive her but failed." In the meantime,
Afifa's parents rushed to the scene and put her in the car and were
on their way to the hospital when the ambulance arrived. She was then
transferred into the ambulance. However, Afifa was declared dead on
arrival.

Afifa leaves behind her father, mother, younger sister Umama, who is
studying in class eight and her brother Uzair is in class
three. "Afifa and I loosened up together before the race and she told
me that she would definitely win the race and she also had plans to
take part in the 1,500 meters race," recollected her friend.

Her friend added that her mother would always tell her to pay more
attention to her studies but Afifa used to say that sports
certificates would help her one day to find a job. Her ambition was
to become a doctor. Aafifa's father Mirza, an employee of Khatib
Company, told the Arab Times that he had advised his daughter that he
would accompany her to the ground on Monday but he said she refused.
Mirza, who appeared emotionally choked, also said Afifa was a
brilliant student and always gave her best both in studies and
sports. The harris of Afifa's building said Afifa was a bundle of
energy and a very hardworking girl.

The news of Afifa's death spread like wildfire and a large number of
people including her friends and relatives gathered at her apartment
in Salmiya to offer their condolences to the bereaved family. Afifa
will be laid to rest Tuesday (today) 10 am at the Sulaibiyakhat
cemetery.
