A Very Happy Feast - St. Francis Xavier

Dear compatriots wherever you are,

I wish you a Very Happy Feast of St. Francis Xavier, the Spanish priest who conquered the soul and hearts of a great part of Goa and went on to become the Apostle of the East. But to us Goans he continues to be Goemcho Pai (Father of Goa). His feast will be celebrated througout the Goan world...that is where Goans live with great pomp and glory. What great joy to celebrate it in the Goan community.

But me, I am a lone Goan here in the Province of Malaga, Spain, and no one here to shake hands and say Boas Festas or Sontosbhorit Festacho Dis.

So, I'll sing to you the English version I had composed of the Konkani hymn of St. Francis Xavier: San Francis Xaviera, Vhodda Kunvra...

If you know the Konkani one you too could sing it.

Sam Francis Xaviera, vhodda kunvra,
rat-dis amchea mogan lastolea,
    besanv ghal, Saiba, xharar Goenchea
      samballun amkam gopant tujea.

Beporva korun sonvsarachi
Devachi tunvem keli chakri
   ami somest magtanv mozot tuji
     kortai mhunn milagri, milagri.

Aiz ani sodam amche khatir
vinoti kor tum Deva lagim
   Jezu sarkem zaum jivit amchem
    ami pavo-sor tuje sorxim.

You rule o'er Goa five centuries since;
Today we've gathered our voice to raise,
To sing you hymn of love, and hymn of praise.

St. Francis Xavier, in Rome's your hand,
God destined you to be in our dear land;
We pray to-u dear saint Goa to bless,
And bless our children with true happiness.

3.
St. Francis Xavier, we now implore,
Please pray for emigrants who've come for more;
And bless this country that gave-us abode,
So with prosperity their coffers load.
