Panaji, Dec 3, 2004: A book titled "Magnificent Monuments of Old Goa" was launched today by the Apostolic Nuncio to India, Reverend Pedro Lopez Quintana at the Archiepiscopal palace, Old Goa, before the solemn pontifical feast mass of St Francis Xavier.The well-researched coffee table book was presented by Fr Olava Pereira, president of the Diocesan Commission for Sacred Art, to the Papal Nuncio, after he viewed the painting exhibition, Bridging the gaps through the Gospel. The author, Mr Patrick Lobo, thereafter gave the autographed book to the Papal Nuncio and other dignitaries.
The book traces the growth of worship from its Hebrew beginnings through the construction and architecture of the first temples to the spread of worship to Spain, Portugal, India and Goa. The thirteen churches and chapels at various stages of preservation at Old Goa are presented within a wide-ranging historical perspective. The book has forewords by Fr Delio Mendonca, Fr Moreno de Souza (consultant) and Marie Yvette Albuquerque e Avelar Barreto (editor).
The Archbishop-Patriarch Rev Filipe Neri Ferrao, Archbishop-Patriarch Emeritus Rev Raul Gonsalves, the Papal Nuncio in South Africa Archbishop Rev Blasco Colaco and other high-ranking clergy were present during the launch of the book.
