LEANNE VISITS THE MODERN HIGH SCHOOL , DUBAI

Dated: 27th September 2004

It was a special morning at The Modern High School as our very own Leanne Fernandes visited the school. Leanne is a brave fifth grade pupil who is stricken with cancer and presently undergoing treatment at the Great Ormond Street hospital in London. Pupils, parents & well-wishers raised a sum of 1.6 million dirhams in ten days for her treatment.

We were thrilled to have Leanne in our midst again. She received a standing ovation. The children from Grades 1 to 12 cheered and welcomed her at a special assembly this morning. Leanne expressed her sincere thanks in a short speech:

Dear Principal,  Headmaster, Headmistress, teachers and fellow students,

This is an unexpected visit to Dubai and to the school.

I, together with my parents, cannot thank you enough for all the help.

I still have a long way to go but  with your prayers

and Gods grace I will be able to get well and live to tell everyone the story of my life.

When I tell the doctors and nurses of what you have done they are amazed just as they were amazed at the numerous cards that I received.

I thank you all with my deepest gratitude. May God bless you all.

While thanking you, dear parents, for your generous contribution, we implore you to keep Leanne in your prayers. She still has a long way to go and will be back in London to pursue her treatment.

Leanne will now have her bone-marrow transplant shortly. We were delighted to see how God has transformed her life. Please continue to support her in prayer.

Brave schoolgirl loses battle with leukaemia

By Meraj Rizvi
9 December 2004/Khaleej Times

DUBAI Leanne Fernandes, grade five student of The Modern High School (TMHS), Dubai, passed away yesterday at a London hospital after battling with leukaemia for over two years.

The 10-year-old student was undergoing treatment at Great Ormond Street Hospital in London for a while where she was to undergo a bone-marrow transplant operation. But, due to her critical condition, doctors were unable to perform the surgery, funds for which were generated by her school in Dubai. Leanne was on a life support system as her condition deteriorated yesterday and passed away early yesterday morning. The news of her death was received in the afternoon by the school principal, Darryl Bloud .Mr Fernandes, Leannes father, informed me over the telephone from London about the tragic demise of Leanne, the principal said.

We are completely devastated and have cancelled all the celebrations lined up for the Childrens day on December 15. Instead, a memorial service will now be held on the same day at 11.30am and will be open to all the students and teachers of TMHS and well-wishers of the family, disclosed Bloud, who was yet to break the news to his students who had left for the day.

Bloud recalled Leannes last visit to the school on September 27, 2004, when she was in Dubai for a few days. Leanne appeared very happy and in her report read out to the students during the school assembly, Leanne expressed happiness on the support and love received from her school and her classmates. The school had last year raised funds to help Leanne fight her battle with leukaemia and undergo the bone marrow transplant operation. Her brother who is a grade six student of TMHS was flown to UK in November for the operation, which could never take place due to medical complications and her deteriorating health condition. Leannes parents who were by her side when she died, plan to fly the body to Goa in India for her final rites on December 16.

In safe hands
From Ms S. Unnithan, Sharjah
My children are pupils of Modern High School, Dubai. When I saw your newspaper (March 14), I felt so happy and proud that the school has managed to raise over Dh1 million for the treatment of Leanne Fernandes.

Actually when we received the appeal letter from the school, I never thought that they would be able to raise the required amount within such a short period.

This became possible only because of the principal's initiative, optimism and his trust in his pupils and parents. This is a reassurance to the parents that our children are in the best hands.

Now let us unite and pray for the Leanne's speedy recovery and safe return.

Efficient school
From Mr. M. and Mrs. K. Darukhanawalla, Dubai

We were happy to see Gulf News (March 14) carry the article on Leanne Fernandes and Modern High School. Our children study at Modern High School and we know the efficiency with which the school responded to a parent's appeal.

I am proud of the school, its principal and the entire staff for their initiative and efforts in supporting Leanne's parents through such difficult times.
