IFFI 2005 to be hosted in Goa - Jaipal Reddy Union Minister for IB
The IFFI Goa 2004 extravaganza will come to an end
this evening with a live performance of Ms Hema
Sardessai, Bondo (brother of Timoteo Fernandes of ex
Tuna Sparks) and Remo Fernandes featuring in a live
performance at the Campal Grounds near Sports
authority of India Complex a little before the Mirmar
city beach.
Earlier in the day the Union Minister for Information
and Broadcasting Mr Jaipal Reddy announced firmly that
Goa India's tiniest 25th State would continue to be
the venue for the International Film festival of India
"next year" but did not elaborate on whether it would
be a permanent venue . This could largely be due to
political repercussion it may have with his political
party which is on the Opposition benches and did not
take kindly to the extravaganza.
But there was unanimity on the point that Goa indeed
should be the "permanent venue "for it had all the
characteristics that make can make the Film Festival a
success. Whether it was Mr Anupam Kher,
Ms Shabana Azmi, Mr Shyam Benegal and ofcourse the
several foreign delegates that stayed in Goa -- they
found the capital city transformed into a large
entertainment arena.
It was so tastefully decorated that it did provide a
feast to the naked eye and could easily turn envious
to visitors from outside the state.
And above all this was achieved in a record time they
commented.
And the crowds that thronged today evening could be
the litmus test that the festival did win the hearts
and appreciation of thousands.
Many argued that if it were not for buses provided to
areas in the Novas Conquistas (New Conquests \) like
Sattari Sanguem Ponda Bicholim etc the crowds mainly
Hindus would not have filled the area.
Infact most of the front seat "invitees" were "patrons
of the local ruling BJP" as many of them would be seen
leaving the auditorium the moment the films like
"Vanity Fair" "Alexander" or the A R Rehman Musical
was performed.
It was the Iranian film which won the top awards for
this years festival Film-maker Asghar Farhadi's The
Beautiful City won prize Golden Peacock Rs 5,00,000 in
the Asian competitive section of International Film
Festival of India this evening.
The Silver Peacock Rs 2,50,00 most promising Asian
director Ekachai Uekrongthan of Thailand for his
Beautiful Boxer while the special jury award--also a
Silver Peacock-- was coveted by Iranian actor Farmarz
Gharibian" for his role paly in "The Beautiful City".
Thus far Aamir Khan Hritik Roshan Madhuri Dixit
Karisma Kapoor Preity Zinta Salman Khan Amitabh
Bachchan Rani Mukherjee besides Shabana Azmi Javed
Akhtar B Irani Javed Jaffery Sanjay Dutt and others
visited the IFFI Goa 2004, and nearly 58 films took
part in the competition round.
It was indeed interesting to note that Panaji remained
"garbage free" "beggars free" and above all "dog free"
One wonders whether the post IFFI Goa 2004 the dogs
beggars will be release to stray de novo and the
garbage continue to stink.
There were many setbacks whic deserve mention as well
the security Group 4 FalcK from New Delhi under the
banner of the Goa wing Group and Security Guards Pvt
Ltd at Porvorim did give unpleasant and embarrasing
moments to the the genuine invites. Their "Nope" to
the guests sometimes not knowing the genuinity of the
card etc caused a lot of irritation. Even the Central
reserve police were more polite and respectful.
Obviously they wanted to score a point in their
efficiency but they almost nearly created an avoidable
riot when they made a huge line up of audience members
wind up without explanation when the counters were
declared closed. Such was the annoyance that the
security personnel would not listen to the voice of
reason. This hurt many resulting in the Chief
Minister himself manning the gates. But this was no
consolation to poor organisation at the gates and the
"invites" which was intended to woo the voters, and
nothing beyond --- but it needs to be remembered that
entertainment is pass time and the economic burdens on
the citizens decide the votes none other.
There is a clear case of ex Chief Minister of Andhra
Pradesh Mr Chandrababu Naidu who earned the sobriquet
of CEO of Cyberabad but finally was voted out at the
hustings.
There is a move to appoint two persons superannuating
from the Directorate of Film Festival New Delhi and a
another to be appointed from the open market.
This is an opportunity for Goans world wide with
experience in film industry to vy for this position.
The appointments will be made under the Entertainment
Society of Goa which hitherto will continue to be an
autonomous body linked with the Film festival.
An interesting feature this evening was that Hema
Sardessai was at pains to build a rapport with the
stiff lipped audience seated in the "invitees seat"
because they were not material receptive to such
gyrating music -- one woman even refused to be seated
in the front row and petitioned the police to allow
her sit in the aisle. But they came becuase they were
"invited" and had to tell others that they went for
"IFFI" because that was the in thing for everyone in
Goa the week gone by.

day festivities
