He is an administrator for Sylvan Learning Center in Piedmont and she is senior producer for LeapFrog in Emeryville. They live in Oakland and are both on a year sabbatical to travel.
They started their trip in Japan through China, a train ride through Russia, etc. They were in Sri Lanka two-and-a-half weeks ago and now are in Goa, India.
I have been a frantic and worried mother until late Tuesday night I received this e-mail when he and his wife briefly described their experience in India on Dec. 26.
Enclosed is an e-mail they sent me from Goa, the day after the earthquake hit.

Wow - what a crazy experience. Having just talked to our family on Christmas day to tell them how relaxing and wonderful the beach was...
On the afternoon of Dec. 26th, we took a walk to a rocky point at the end of the beach to watch the sunset. We got to the top of the rocks and turned around to notice that the water/tide was coming in very quickly. We had been told the tide comes in and blocks the way back to the beach, so we immediately left and went back to our hut. At that moment, we met two people that told us about the earthquakes.
We went to dinner and gave a blessing to the fact that we were so far removed from the danger. Then we casually walked back to our hut...
Within 10 minutes, we could hear the waves pounding. We opened our door and saw the surf coming up over the walls. We grabbed our essentials and ran to the main street. Due to the TV news coverage of all the tsunamis elsewhere - people panicked. Locals were the most chaotic - rickshaws, trucks and motorcycles were racing out of town - blowing horns and weaving through people in the dark. We were told the beach restaurants got hammered and people had to just get up and run - leaving everything behind.
The tides are doing strange things - coming in suddenly and leaving as quickly. When the tide receded, we went back, got our bags and walked about three kilometers with fellow travelers to a church. We spent the night in a little church schoolroom. Hundreds of people had fled town completely - a little over reactionary, but understandable.
All is fine at the beach. People are returning, but we are all keeping a close eye on the shore. Police are around. We will leave in a couple of days, unless things worsen. But we really are out of the danger zone - its just that the tides have been impacted. Love you all,
Sabrina and Martin Walasek
