Konkani Channel Needed
GOA still remains under the yoke of pro-Maharashtra elements in so far as TV broadcast of the Konkani language is concerned. Even the one-hour slot earmarked for Panaji Doordarshan kendra from 6 p.m to 7 p.m has been invariably trampled by Doordarshan Sahyadri. The recent launch by DD of over 30 free-to-air DTH service including private channels does not have a dedicated TV channel for Goa, which is indeed pathetic considering the rich cultural heritage Goa boasts of and the state enjoying the status of a tourist destination. The moot point here is when DD�s bouquet consist of 14 private channels and 18 regional channels representing most of the official languages under the Constitution, our Konkani language is conspicuous by its non-inclusion. Regrettably, a dedicated TV channel does not figure in the state government�s list of priorities. The IFFI would have received better electronic coverage on a full-time basis if Goa had an exclusive DD channel. We have still not missed the bus as Sanchar Prasar Nigam, the autonomous broadcaster of DD intends to add additional channels in a phased manner. The authorities concerned will do well to make a concerted effort and put up our case for an exclusive channel instead of riding piggy-back on Marathi. The opposition should support this worthy cause.
