Gomant Vishwa Sammelan censures ''distortion'' by media
Panaji, Jan 6, 2005 (UNI) The alleged ''negative role'' of the Fourth Estate has come in for sharp criticism with Chief Minister Manohar Parrikar stressing that trained journalists were the need of the hour to avoid possible ''distortion of facts'' which reflected poorly on governments.
The valedictory session of the second ''Gomant Vishwa Sammelan'' at Kala Academy yesterday facilitated interaction of the non-resident Indians from abroad and delegates from within the country with the Chief Minister.
The Chief minister referred to a photo feature in a Konkan daily showing the delegates sleeping on Tuesday during the three-day session that was meant for forging a dialogue between the government and the NRI community for contributing to the development of the island state.
Taking note of the protest offered by the Goa Union of Jounralists (GUJ) president Ashley Rosario in the session, the Chief Minister clarified that whatever he had said against the negative role of the media should not be construed as ''media bashing''.
''I still believe that the media should be free. I always try to avoid media hype and shun yellow journalism. Misreporting affects public opinion of the government,'' Parrikar said.
Quoting the Sunday edition of a prominent eveninger and a television channel that he had no feelings of sympathy with tsunami victims, the Chief Minister said the media had every right to criticise but should at the same time be accountable for its writings and receptive to its criticism.
The media, he said, required trained journalists in tune with its rapid expansion and even the editors required training. Constructive criticism was always welcome but showing everything in a negative light was not proper.
