While the 36th Anniversary Celebrations of the Goa Cultural & Social Centre (first two Mando's were celebrated by Clube Nacional under the Presidentship of Bernado Fernandes father of Remo Fernandes) which included the prize distribution ceremony of the 38th Mando Festival (held earlier in Novenmber 2004 at Don Bosco Indoor Hall St Inez) at the Clube Nacional one of the oldest cultural centres (now in an entirely
poorly mainatained state) of Panaji.
But the response was extremely poor just 38 persons including the prize winners, organisers press and cable TV crew.
The prizes were awarded for the first three in Junior Category Traditional category Individual and consolation prize which went to Fatordachem Fulam, of Fr Roman Gonsalves, Bhorvasanchim Burgim, Chinchinim and Perpetualites of Navelim Curtorimche Salkam, Mando Mogi Margao Fatordache Fulam.
The main prize in the Original category was bagged by Curtorimchem Salkam Mando Mogi and St Xaviers College Mapusa.
The prizes were given by the Chief Guest Honourable Minister for Water Resources Mr Filipe Neri Rodrigues (MLA Velim) who is also the Chairman of the Organising Committee of the 38th Mando Festival.
The Minister assured that the budgetary provision would be made for culutural programmes which would among other things include Mando as well. However this would be in place only before the 39th Mando Festival.
The Chief Ministers public assurance of a premise for the Cultural Centre before 31st December, 2004 which received loud applause then from the audience has NOT materialised yet.
But there is a ray of hope, as a premise has been identified by the Centre on 18th June Road and if all goes well this premise will be purchased on outright basis by the Centre with the Government either funding the entire cost of purchase or a 50:50 share. A meeting to this effect is scheduled next week.
The Minister of Water Resources has however been requested to use his good offices and ensure that the purchase of the same materialises. The organisors feel that the premises once acquired will help in boosting the Centres activity.
It may also be noted that the Minister "donated personal funds" for the prizes and organising of the 38th Mando Festival for which he was profusedly thanked by the moving spirit behind the Centres activities Mr Issac Dias Treasurer of GCSC. It may be noted that lack of participation is because the Centre has no funds to pay the participants for travel and movement of equipment leave aside their performance which the participants do so free of cost only out of an emotional love fot reviving the dying Mando.
The collections from tickets souvenirs and canteen does not provide much as this amount goes for the hall and bare minimum required for organising the event.
The Clube Nacional Organising committee was however kind enough to allow the use of its premise free of cost today.
This writer interacted with two prominent well wishers present on the ocassion who expressed their total displeasure over the attitude of successive governments to give step motherly treatment to the
Centre. "Why should we beg for doles" isnt the Government promoting cultural activites of other neighbouring States in Goa or granting preferential treatment to a prominent Cultural club in Ponda the
Samrat Club which despite its tall claims and being the highest recepient of funds from the Government has not been able to produce "a Lata Mangueshkar till date".
Yet another expressed disgust over the organising committee members most of whom were government employees or retired personnel with a mediocre mindset having little or no experience in event management which reflects in the poor showmanship an stage management. The absence of youth also leads to the - diminishing public support owing to poor
quality presentation.
The Minstrels led by Ms Eutania Fernandes provided some old songs and instrumentals -- but left much to be desired on their quality of music --winding up the 45 minute event with "Adeus korche vel pavlo"
Cakes and cold drinks were offered to all and sundry.
But the spirits of the organisors were up when this though poorly attended function was covered by Goa's three prominent cable operators in Konkani and English which would reach out to a wider audience.
Apparently the organisors could have kept this event on a working day as Panaji being essentially an administrative centre of Goa is deserted on Sundays.
