Door falls off skybus during show of safety

Margao: Just as B Rajaram, managing director, Konkan Railway, was emphasising the safety of the new skybus metro project, a door of the bus accidentally fell off.
Explaining the mishap, Rajaram said, �We have been concentrating on the dynamics, rather than the doors. The door was unlocked and it fell down. Yes, it was a stupid mistake and should not have happened.�
The Konkan Railway had taken a group of journalists to Margao to see the skybus and take a ride in it, yesterday.
The project had earlier run into rough weather when one person died and two others were injured in an accident on September 25.
The project is soon to be evaluated by the Commissioner of Railway Safety.
The skybus metro project, which is Rajaram�s brainchild, was to be completed before he retired on January 31. Last week, a successful trial was made
on the Rs 50 crore test track at Margao.
Meanwhile, Rajaram gave a briefing on the development of the project, under way since 1989. He said questions were raised about the skybus�s viability and safety and some motivated groups were trying to stall the project.
�But I must tell you it is much cheaper. We are offering the project at a cost of Rs 50 crore per kilometre, while abroad, the same service costs Rs 120 crore per kilometre,� he said, adding that passengers were subjected to fewer jerks on the skybus as compared with a suburban train. |
