MUMBAI: "Political events have kept me going," said 83-year-old R K Laxman from his Breach Candy home in Mumbai. He added peevishly that today's political theatre no longer offered the rich pickings of yore. "I'm glad I started when people like Nehru and Gandhi were around, and behaved in a manner suitable for a satirist. Today, all politicians dress in the same manner." Ever since he suffered a stroke a few years ago, The Times of India's resident genius has mostly worked out of home, dividing his time between Mumbai and Pune. The latter city, which has displaced Mumbai in his affections, has been quick to leverage the honour by erecting a statue of the Common Man at the Symbiosis Institute. The long-suffering dhoti-clad Everyman, easily one of India's most well-loved mascots, has survived riots, budgets, scams and gaping potholes (Laxman's pet hate) with that look of eternal bewilderment, leaving his formidable wife to have the first and last word.
 "I am happy that I had a platform like The Times of India," said Laxman. "The paper has given me the opportunity to express my talent." Asked if he had an encouraging message for aspiring cartoonists, he retorted, "I don't see any."
