NYC Rolling Trophy
United Goans, Chinchinim advance

Kuwait: United Goans (UG) got the better of young rookies Paradiso Football Club 4-2 in the first round of the 15th Edition of Navelim Youth Centre Rolling Trophy 11-aside football tournament played at the famous Sour Grounds.

The experience of evergreen UG stalwart Joseph Salema was too much for the young Paradiso players. With his deft passing and dribbling, Salema, donning the much admired  No. 10 jersey almost single-handedly turned the tables over Paradiso. It is indeed a pleasure to watch this skillful, dedicated and disciplined footballer in action. Salema is an example to many a budding footballer and he seems to be bettering himself every season.

It was Paradiso Club though who drew the first salvo as early as the opening minute of the game off a lob by Altaf Khan that beat goalkeeper Joe Tereza. But Paradisos lack of experience in controlling the midfield and lacklustre goalkeeping by Clinton let them down. UG drew level within ten minutes off a combined move by Amaldo Fernandes, Phillip Menezes and Joseph Salema. A cross from the left saw UG's midfielder Valentino Azavedo rushing from nowhere to head into the net past goalkeeper Clinton.

Salema gave the lead for UG soon after with a stiff grounder from outside the box. Agustinho Braganza and Agnelo increased the lead for UG in the second half. Paradisos Jeffrey scored a late consolation goal. Fabien, Ashley, Kenneth, Sydney and substitute Clifford Pinto of Paradiso FC showed loads of enthusiasm and determination throughout the match. These youngsters may, with hard practice, turn out to be some of the future footballers to shine on Sour Gounds.

With two tournament victories under their belt this season, Kerala Challengers started their campaign of the NYC Trophy with a hard fought 1-0 victory over dark horses Veterans XI.

The all important goal was scored by winger S. Joy.

Kerala Challengers a team of budding youngsters are one of the toughest teams on Sour grounds this season. Right from the first whistle, they let nothing away. Cletus Mathew, Haridas and K. Basheer excelled in quick passing and running.

Veterans XI struggled to find their bearings in the early part of the match but accelerated later with Steven Fernandes, Adolf D Souza, Savio Furtado and Rubin Fernandes working hard to create the moves. Substitute Diem Dias and Casmiro D' Souza too fought a valiant battle but failed to get the equaliser.

In the other matches, Rising Stars Clube Recreativo earned a hard fought 7-6 (1-1) sudden death victory over Santos Football Club; while CRC Chinchinim goalkeeper Anthony Lobo was the hero of the team in their match against Viva Goa, saving two penalties to take Chinchinim into the next round.

Midfielder Russel Rodrigues gave Santos Football Club a fifteenth minute lead with a spectacular long ranger from 30 yards but Rising Stars' Jimmy Pereira leveled from the penalty spot in the second half when one of the Santos players handled a goal bound shot inside the D.

In the tie-breaker Rising Stars scored through Sajan, Jimmy, Ashton Fernandes, Gerald Vaz, Custodio and Ubaldo. Santos FC were on target with Agnelo Carvalho, Jose, Peter, Jacinto and Vidhesh making no mistakes. Datadeep Narvekars kick was saved by stand-in Rising Stars goalkeeper Ashton while Russel shot out.
