AVC overcome G.O.A Maroons; Curtorcares ahead
Kuwait: Those expecting a tough tussle between G.O.A Maroons and AVC Overseas Association in keeping with the pivotal importance given to their first round match of the XVth Edition of Navelim Youth Centre (NYC) Rolling Trophy were right.
The game played at Soor Grounds under the auspices of Kuwait Indian Football Federation rose to soaring heights as expected. Just a minute had remained for the final whistle when AVC�s substitute Ronnie Fernandes lashed in from close to settle a game which had seen the ball see-saw frantically from one end to the other.
Chances flowed freely from the start with both teams creating goal scoring openings. Francis Fernandes, Roland and Agnelo Miranda excelled for AVC while G.O.A Maroons were mostly dependable on defenders James Figuiera and Ian D� Souza to build up their moves.
In the first half, Maroons' defenders Ian D� Souza and Derrick Gomendes were almost caught out when AVC striker Kevin Vaz crashed a volley from the right flank which however flew way above the post. Not long after, Maroons� Dave shot across the face of the goal following good work from Edward Dias.
Midway into the second half, Referee P.A. Tony showed marching orders to G.O.A Maroons� Elvis D� Souza and AVC goalkeeper Alvaro Dias for indulging in a physical scuffle.
In the last quarter of the match Maroons� up front players Lucian, Dave and Larry were sluggish and struggled to get any real forward momentum past AVC defenders Godfrey Aguair andVincy Pereira.
The winning goal for AVC came in when Ronnie struck from near the goal line after Maroons� defenders and goalkeeper Henry failed to clear the ball first time to safety. Ronnie himself had created the opening by beating Teddy Pinto on the right flank.

In the other match of the day Curtorcares United won against United Friends Club (UFC) 4-3 in the tie-breaker after the normal period and extra-time failed to break the dead-lock.
UFC dominated the early exchanges, forcing a string of corners and going close to scoring with a Menino Fernandes drive that however went over the bar. UFC were clearly on top in the second half as well with Jose Rod, Rui Silveira, Joe Rebello and Agnelo (Mam) involved in numerous moves. Lourenco Cardozo and Francis of Curtorcares United saved two sure goals clearing the ball off headers on the goal line.
Curtorcares United scored through Ivo D� Costa, Lourenco, Phillip Ferrao and Malvy Fernandes while Mauricio Simoes, Sarto Baptista and Rui Silveira scored for the losers. Menino and Agnelo�s tries were saved by stand-in Curtorcares goalkeeper Lourenco.
Referee Manuel Dias showed yellow cards to Curtorcares United's Caridade D' Souza and Francis, and to Joe Rebello of UFC.
The day's matches proved some point to the spectators as one well-read official rightly put it: "Anyone can loose a match, but the ones who leave the field with a smile, and cheerfully turn out again to play another are the real winners on Soor Grounds..."
There is so much truth in it. What more can one say when we see humble and popular players like Theodore (Teddy) Pinto, Ian D' Souza (G.O.A Maroons) and the ever smiling Jose Rod (United Friends)? It is their noted behavior on and off the field that makes them even more respected, loved and popular than the admiration they already hold.
