All fought in freedom struggle as Goans

by Agnel Crasto

Mr Flaviano Dias the freedom fighter and the head of the government script committee defends the documentary CD on Goas freedom struggle without any convincing truths or arguments which appeared in an interview in the NT on January 3, 2005. No bibliography is given as reference by Mr Dias but merely saying that the various books were referred to, is no argument. Which history books were relied upon? It appears that the committee depended on Mr Manohar Hirbai Sardesai. Is this book exhaustive? When was the freedom struggle started? Not in 1510 nor in 1733. India was ruled by various local kings, nawabs, maharajas. There was no political India in those days.

India is a political creation of the British rule which defeated the various local rulers. There were no freedom fighters then, there were various revolts in the local kingdoms. In 1733, it is not that the people resisted the Portuguese, the Goans resisted the Ranes and the Marathas from invading Goa. The Portuguese built the Fort of St Estevam in 1688 to protect Goa from invaders.

The question of differentiation does not arise. The conqueror from time immemorial, butchered and raped the conquered people. Aurangzeb, Hitler, Mussolini killed thousands of people to gain political power. Rapes, murders are also taking place today in our free country. Are we free from violence and hatred today? Why was violence highlighted so much in the film? This film should be shown only to adults, if at all it is to be shown.

Who says there were no Christians before the Portuguese came along? St Thomas spread Christianity much earlier before the Portuguese came to India.

Going to the Portuguese embassy in Delhi proves nothing. Having a cross on all ships that came to India is wrong information. The Red Cross Society also carries crosses today. It has nothing to do with religion. The crusaders had crosses because of religious wars. British, Dutch, French ships did not have crosses.

Mr Dias claims that he had a committee of 11 people and two experts. Were they objective or subjective experts? How did they interpret history? Constructively or destructively?

Mr Dias speaks of two movements, violent and non-violent. The Gandhian method which was followed by Dr Lohia is history today. Where is the question of differentiating RSS, Christian, Hindus and Muslims in the freedom struggle? All Goans fought as one for the freedom struggle we had two types of leaderships, Rightist and the Leftist like Lawande and others who tried to take the cake and eat it too. According to Mr Dias the RSS were the last lot to join the freedom struggle in 1955. Is this true?

The question of more Christians or less in the freedom struggle is not important because Goans fought for the freedom struggle. Why highlight only Christians in the negative? The whole film is negative.

We may have educationists in committees, but do we know what political ideology they believe in? We cannot compare the violence in the The Passion of Christ to the violence in freedom struggle CD. The two films show different aspects of violence, and extremism. Fundamentalism must be condemned in both the films.

In 1583, a number of anti-social elements took advantage of the freedom struggle which led to the destruction of temples. This is happening even today. Temples, mosques and churches are being destroyed even in free India. The so-called facts, mentioned by Mr Dias are not historical facts but hearsay evidence distorted by vested interests.

The film should have shown the truth the causes of discontent, methods of the freedom fighters and so on. Besides, I would like to know what part was played by Mr Flaviano Dias as a freedom fighter. Or has he been used as a scapegoat by the powers-that-be?
