20 February 2005 – Legislative Elections Day

The Portuguese are choosing today a new Government for the next 4 years.

Voting has ended in Portugal 7.00 pm GMT. Two hours after, at 9.00 pm, the exit polls are already pointing out to a very comfortable victory for the Portuguese Socialist Party (PS) with 45% to 49% votes. If confirmed, it will be the first time the Socialist Party achieves absolute majority in the Portuguese Parliament. The new Prime Minister will be the socialist party leader Eng. Jose Socrates.

RTP1, the main Portuguese Television channel has just interviewed Member of European Parliament Dr. Antonio Costa, son of the Goan writer Orlando da Costa, who, according to the Portuguese media, is expected be invited by Socrates to interrupt his European mandate, return to Portugal and be part of the new Portuguese Government in a senior ministerial position.

Antonio Costa had been Law Minister in the previous Socialist party of Prime Minister Eng. Antonio Guterres and is likely to occupy the same position in the new Portuguese Government elected today (confirmation pending).

Please note: The predictions are from the Portuguese media. Not mine.

Best regards

Paulo Colaco Dias.
