PRESS NOTE FOR PUBLICATION

Mr. Matanhy Saldanha MLA, in a statement issued here
today, strongly condemned the political parties and
individuals who are working very hard to polarize the
Goan community on religious basis all for selfish and
personal gains.

Mr. Saldanha said that if Goa is to progress and bring
prosperity to all Goans, the politicians in power or
otherwise should stop shouting at the top of their
voices on behalf of the majority or the minority
community. This is a divisive stand. It is not only
immoral and inhuman, it is anti-national.

Mr. Saldanha said sufficient damage has been done to
Goa to disturb its harmonious social fabric by
politicians for their own survival, delibrately
dividing Goans on communal and caste basis.
Mr. Saldanha said that it is now time for him to speak
and make it clear that in public life religion and
caste have no place. He said that his only identity
as a public person is that he is a Goan, a legislator,
elected by all people from his Cortalim Constituency
irrespective of religion, and his duty is to govern,
legislate and serve the people of Goa guided by the
Constitution of the country without any
discrimination.

"I wish to make it very clear that I always fought
against the tide since 1974 onwards and always stood
till date with those for whom I fought and will
continue doing so till I achieve the goals. The
people who critize me are the ones who do not have any
ideology nor goals in public life. The only purpose
they enter politics is to serve their own interests by
fair or foul means"
Mr. Saldanha cautioned Goans of those who go with the
tide. There is a danger that the political Tsunami
which affected Goa for personal gains and selfish
interests of the politicians will wash away the Goans
as a whole.

The motto of civilized leadership in a democratic
system is to improve the quality of life of those whom
they govern in all aspects. Anything short of this
goal is a sham and a manipulation of the electorate.
The multiple defections are the clear indicators of
selfishness and the latest developments of switching
sides by contravening the spirit of the Tenth Schedule
of the Constitution with total disregard of the people
is a complete epitome of degeneration of social, moral
and ethical values, he said.

In Goa since 1961, the politicians have digressed from
the values of equality, justice and fair play for
electoral gains. All politicians, covertly or overtly
have been slipping backwards towards primitiveness in
order to gain power by inciting the weakness of the
people based on caste and creed, as the same becomes
an easy tool in the hands of the politicians whose aim
is to divide and rule. It is time to stop this
negative populist approach to incite emotional
sensibilities. Instead people should be guided by
higher values of humanism based on rationality and not
power and money.

Mr. Saldanha calls upon the people of Goa to stand up
firmly without fear and not get misguided by emotional
or religious slogans of the politicians from any
party. It is only the people of Goa who can protect
the interests of Goans in a democratic system, he
said.
