An Appeal For Help Stephen Vas Who Has Been Paralyzed Due To An Accident

Mangalore, Feb 28: Destiny struck the energetic young man Stephen Vas, a student of St. Aloysius Technical School, who lost his balance and fell backwards while carrying a bag of rice.  This extremely tragic fall caused severe damage to his spinal cord which resulted in paralyzing his whole body except for his hands.  Now, instead of helping his family he has to depend all his life on them.

Stephen hails from Neermarga, a family of small farmers.  His father works as coolie to supplement his income from his small farm.  His mother is a housewife.  He hails from a sibship of five, four boys and a girl. His eldest sister is married.  Two of his brothers are working as coolies and one is in school.  Stephen finished his 10th Standard and was doing a course in welding in St Aloysius Technical School.  His family had put their hopes on him and now they can hardly seek out a living and this unforeseen tragedy has added to their miseries.

In the beginning the doctors said that there is nothing they could do. Except for the head and hand he did not have any sensation in his whole body. Now there is some improvement. He still can't move his legs or toes. But now he has recovered some sensation in his feet.

In spite of these odds, Stephen is keeping cheerful and has tremendous hope in his commitment for recovery.  He has very strong faith in prayers. He is hopeful that he will be cured.  He spends his time reading and praying.  His mother and sister come everyday bringing food for him, feed him, to help in his toilet needs and to spend time with him.

He is getting extensive physiotherapy treatment every day. The treatment has to be given for a long time.  He will have to be in the hospital as there are no physiotherapists in Neermarga and it is too far for any therapist to go on a regular basis. The buses are few and take a long time and quite expensive.  Stephen needs helps to pay for the treatment, medicine, and hospital stay and for the bus fare of the mother/sister.  The doctors have advised that he has to be given some nourishing food but his family can afford only rice and vegetables.

Those who wish to send financial help to support Stephen's medical cost, kindly make your cheque in favour of "STEPHEN VAS A/C : 22736, Canara Bank " and inform Fr. Denzil Lobo S.J. by email.
